Hank Posted March 30, 2006 Report Posted March 30, 2006 Just out last week, this is a good overview of Rawls' 60s jazz/blues work. It includes a track or two from separate sessions he did with the Bennys arranging--Carter and Golson. And, interestingly, three previously unreleased tracks are added on from a session Rawls did with Curtis Amy. Amy's band includes several of the same players who played on the Katanga session (the Rawls date was done a month later), including Ray Crawford and Dupree Bolton. Crawford gets some prominent playing behind Rawls, and Bolton has a nice little solo on "Fine and Mellow." Since Bolton's discography is a little slight, it's pretty cool to find him here. Of course, Rawls is in good form. Too bad they didn't do a whole album. Quote

Dan Gould Posted March 31, 2006 Report Posted March 31, 2006 Well I'm all over this for the unissued Curtis Amy/Dupree Bolton date. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. Quote
Hank Posted March 31, 2006 Author Report Posted March 31, 2006 Well I'm all over this for the unissued Curtis Amy/Dupree Bolton date. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. Definitely worth it for all the great Rawls material. The 3 tunes from the Amy/Bolton session are fairly short (but nicely done) with the longest being "Fine and Mellow" at 3:38. You can sample the disc at CD Universe, who has it for a decent price. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted March 31, 2006 Report Posted March 31, 2006 (edited) Can anybody provide the session details for the unreleased material?? Players, date(s), and tunes. Thanks!! Edit: Don't see a "Fine and Mellow" on the disc that Jim linked to. Is that the right song title? Or is the link to the right disc/release? (That was what prompted my query above about the sessions details -- I wanted to sample the three tunes from the CDU site, and couldn't tell which three were the ones with Amy and Bolton.) Hank Posted March 31, 2006 Author Report Posted March 31, 2006 CDU's listing looks messed up. The final three tracks (18-20) are the unreleased material: "Mean Old World," "Long Gone Blues," and "Fine and Mellow." Personnel: Lou Rawls with Curtis Amy, Dupree Bolton, Ray Crawford, Phil Moore (piano), Henry Franklin, and Doug Sides. March 11, 1963. The Blue Note website might have some info. Quote
Hank Posted March 31, 2006 Author Report Posted March 31, 2006 I see iTunes has the complete album. You could try it there for a sample. Quote
Kalo Posted March 31, 2006 Report Posted March 31, 2006 If you're only going to buy one Lou Rawls album, it might as well have Dupree Bolton on it! Quote
mikeweil Posted October 26, 2009 Report Posted October 26, 2009 (edited) I ordered a copy - I'm on a Lou Rawls kick these days. Nice to see how well connected he was to the L.A. jazz scene. Edited October 26, 2009 by mikeweil Quote
king ubu Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 Mike, please post a comment here with some more details about the contents once you've got the disc! I have the great Tobacco twofer and will have to get the Live and w/McCann and the Mighty Quinn discs as well... I wonder how much is left to hear on this compilation then... Quote

mikeweil Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 (edited) One track, however, is missing that I'd really like to have: Dead End Street. It's on this compliation, which is more pop than jazz, it seems, but still has some great tracks on it: Tracklist: 1. I can't make it alone 2. Love is a hurting thing 3. When she speaks 4. (How do I say) I don't love you anymore 5. Season of the witch 6. Fa fa fa fa fa (Sad song) 7. When love goes wrong 8. Feeling alright 9. You made me so very happy 10. Your good thing (is about to end) 11. You're good for me 12. Dead end street 13. Don't explain 14. A whole lotta woman 15. It's and uphill climb (to the bottom) 16. For what it's worth 17. Gentle on my mind 18. All God's children 19. How can that be 20. Bring it on home to me 21. Can you dig it (Monologue) 22. Take me for what I am 23. Evil woman 24. Soul serenade 25. king ubu Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 Thanks Mike! I dimly remember previous discussion of the date with Amy - that one is nowhere to be found except on this compilation then? Looks like I'll need a copy! Quote
mikeweil Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 (edited) The two LPs Benny Carter arranged are on this twofer CD, but the sound samples didn't make me want to buy it: Tracklist: 1 Nobody but Me 2 Into Each Life Some Rain Must Fall 3 Whispering Grass 4 Two Tickets West 5 It's Monday Everyday 6 The Power of Love 7 If I Had My Life to Live Over 8 For You My Love 9 If It's the Last Thing I Do 10 Gee Baby, Ain't I Good to You 11 Blues for the Weepers 12 What'll I Do? 13 My Buddy 14 Du Bist Die Liebe 15 Margie 16 (Now and Then There's) A Fool Such as I 17 Three O'Clock in the Morning 18 Me and My Shadow 19 Cold, Cold Heart 21 Charmaine 22 Nothing Really Feels the Same 1-11 from Nobody but Lou 12-22 from Lou Rawls with Strings Edited October 27, 2009 by mikeweil Quote

mikeweil Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 (edited) A different selection of big band tracks arranged by Benny Carter or Benny Golson was on this CD (still availble as a marketplace item), but somehow the Axelrod arrangements sound a little more convincing than these Hollywood/Las Vegas style big band charts: Tracklist: 1. For You My Love 2. If I Had My Life to Live Over 3. Nobody But Me 4. Whispering Grass (Don't Tell the Trees) 5. Gee Baby, Ain't I Good to You 6. If It's the Last Thing I Do 7. Blues for the Weepers 8. That's Your Red Wagon 9. Just Squeeze Me (But Don't Tease Me) 10. It's You 11. I Love You, Yes I Do 12. I Wander 13. Wee Baby Blues 14. (I Wonder) Where Our Love Has Gone Edited October 27, 2009 by mikeweil Quote
king ubu Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 Thanks for all the additional information, Mike! I could have picked that Axelrod comp cheaply... will keep my eyes open in case it returns! Quote
