slide_advantage_redoux Posted March 30, 2006 Report Posted March 30, 2006 I am sure that this has been discussed in here already, so bear with me! What are the options for boxes to move records safely and securely? We are in the process of getting our house ready to put on the market, and I need to prepare for the eventual painful move of my collection. The boxes need to be stackable - so they should ideally be sturdily constructed. Crates are a possibilty too. Any options Quote

If you're looking there, get the boxes that measure 16 3/8 X 12 5/8 X 12 5/8. They will fit your LPs perfectly! (about 100-125 depending) They will also fit 3 columns at 2 deep of CDs (6 columns - about 250- 275 discs). I have 109 boxes of them, so it's ingrained in my brain. Rod Quote

Any options Our removal firm brought along a lot of sturdy cardboard boxes (though they underestimated the number needed). It nearly killed the guys getting them up the stairs (my collection is upstairs in the new house), but they did it. It nearly killed me organising the boxes, once upstairs, so I could get the stuff out in approximately the right order, too. If you're doing the move yourself, why not contact some removers and ask to buy a quantity of the type of boxes they use? Best of luck. MG Quote
(BB) Posted March 30, 2006 Report Posted March 30, 2006 My local dealer uses McDonalds French Fry boxes. They seem to be a perfect fit and are of a nice heavy cardboard. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 31, 2006 Report Posted March 31, 2006 I suggest you package them individually in mailers from Uline. They will be well protected. Quote

(about 100-125 depending) The boxes that I use (and most of the LP people around here seem to use them as well) only hold about 50 LP's each. Even at that size, they're plenty heavy for me when they're full. So, consider your poor back before you decide. Quote

Dmitry Posted March 31, 2006 Report Posted March 31, 2006 The best option is to hit your local liquor stores and get as many free wine cardboard boxes as you want, like the one below. They'll be happy to give 'em to you. Perfect fit for about 40-50 Lps. You won't be able to lift more and escape a hernia, anyway. Quote

I work at a wine store, and most of the standard-size wine boxes fit LPs very well, and accommodate an amount that's reasonable to carry. I used them to move my largeish collection the last two times I moved. Just keep some old newspapers on hand to stuff the empty inch-or-so left in some of the boxes and you'll be good to go! Most stores will be happy to let you have them, though I'd recommend stopping by early in the week, rather than later, when the store may need boxes for customers. It never hurts to send a pretty girl for the boxes, either (sexist, but true). Quote
slide_advantage_redoux Posted March 31, 2006 Author Report Posted March 31, 2006 I was about to order a bunch of boxes from Uline because they are priced much less than those at the Container Store. But hey, free boxes from the liquor store work for me. Thanks to all for the suggestions. I knew I could count on you kind folks to respond with good ideas! Quote
Jim R Posted March 31, 2006 Report Posted March 31, 2006 Well, the boxes that I recommended have handles. Quote

But hey, free boxes from the liquor store work for me. Thanks to all for the suggestions. I knew I could count on you kind folks to respond with good ideas! Well, to be honest...if I had to box all of them over again at one time, then I wouldn't use the Container Store either. It's nice now to just get the extra 4 or 5 for new things. There's no way tho, that I could go with a box holding only 40 or 50 LPs tho 'cause I don't have the space for a few hundred boxes. No prob picking my current boxes up as long as I'm careful lifting. rostasi Posted March 31, 2006 Report Posted March 31, 2006 But... ... the boxes that hold 50 only take up half the space of the boxes that hold 100... right? Sorry, yes, of course. I think I was thinking the boxes were only slightly smaller with thicker cardboard. The wine box looked larger to me than it really is in the picture. I suppose it's kinda like the guy who says, "Divide my large pizza into 6 slices because I could never eat 8!" Quote

patricia Posted March 31, 2006 Report Posted March 31, 2006 (edited) A suggestion, considering that I am responsible for throwing out a moving man's back some years ago. When you have packed the first box with your LPs, lift it yourself. If you can't do it without a lot of difficulty, chances are that the moving man can't either. Fifty albums per box seems to be a reasonable maximum to me. The devil boxes I mentioned earlier had about 150 each and were much heavier than I thought they would be. I had packed them and just left them where I packed them. No, I didn't attempt to lift them before the moving guys came. Edited March 31, 2006 by patricia Quote
Barkri12 Posted February 27, 2009 Report Posted February 27, 2009 How do I move a collection of vinyl LP records? I have a medium (500-1,000) collection that I am taking with me on a 2 day move up the east coast in a non-airconditioned moving truck this summer. What techniques should I avoid? What do I need to be aware of? Moving--::--Boxes Quote

I moved 50+ wine boxes full of albums in a moving van several years ago and there were no issues. BTW, many wine boxes are just a centimeter or so too short in one dimension. You've got to test them out. Edited February 27, 2009 by Teasing the Korean Quote
