Washington DC advice....

Recommended Posts

Basically a low key little residential area (w/well maintained 00's-20's townhouses) that's bordered by the State Dept., GWU (George Washington U), Georgetown and the Kennedy Center. Not a bad place to walk around....quick access to Georgetown ....10 blocks to the White House and so. It's not an area that's packed with accomodations and I can't tell you anything about the handful of hotels and/or guest quarters that are located there....but I'd recommend it.

I once went to a bar in Foggy Bottom and saw Amiri Baraka, who was then teaching at GWU, sitting alone in a booth and writing in a notebook. Next to me at the bar were 3 semi-intoxicated Secret Service Agents. I knew they were Agents from listening to their conversation. It was 1979 and in those days I guess they were allowed to talk shop in public while sitting next to a shabby looking kid like me.

Last time in D.C. I stayed at The River Inn (Foggy Bottom). Apartments converted to a hotel and the rooms were excellent. I think the room rate at that time was $149 and I spent an extra $35 at check-in and upgraded my room to what was essentially a really nice 1 bedroom apartment. There is paid parking at the River Inn and a small restaurant with limited hours. Less than a 10 minute walk to the Watergate Hotel - at the Watergate, there's a mini mall kinda thing with a small supermarket, liquor store, cafe/bakery. Loved the River Inn and the area, which was quite residential. http://www.theriverinn.com

Looks like it's going to be the Dupont Circle or surrounding area.

I can't bring myself to leave the dog by herself for three days so taking her with us.

My girlfriend doesn't know this yet. :w

So with the dog along, that means I need to stay at one of the Marriott Residence Inns. I get member points for the stay so it works out well.

I can see why that would be tricky :)

Well, if we don't get together, enjoy your visit! You don't need to reserve or anything at Twins', so it can be a last minute thing. I'm pretty sure I'm going regardless.

Anyone else tempted?

Bertrand.
