Soul Stream Posted March 28, 2006 Author Report Posted March 28, 2006 I think the question was what was your favorite standard Song Quote
clifford_thornton Posted March 28, 2006 Report Posted March 28, 2006 I read somewhere that "What's New?" was originally called "I'm Free." "This Nearly Was Mine" is another standout favorite. The version Sunny Murray does on Big Chief is a classic (of course, there's also CT's version on the Candid)... Quote
John Tapscott Posted March 29, 2006 Report Posted March 29, 2006 I'd probably choose "Come Rain or Come Shine"; also Duke's "Prelude to a Kiss", and Ralph Burns' "Early Autumn" if they qualify. Quote

paul secor Posted March 29, 2006 Report Posted March 29, 2006 "It Never Entered My Mind" did enter my mind right away - probably because of Bud's haunting version. Quote
Kalo Posted March 29, 2006 Report Posted March 29, 2006 Just based on what's running through my mind at any given moment, I can't believe nobody's mentioned "Stardust"! I find myself whistling that one a lot. One of the only standards I can think of where the verse is as interesting as the chorus. "Honeysuckle Rose" gets stuck in the old noggin, too. "Someone to Watch Over Me" is one of the most beautiful standards. I love "Memories of You," almost as much. I can't choose, there's just too many great ones. I haven't even touched on anything by Irving Berlin, Rodgers and Hart, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, Harold Arlen, or Frank Loesser. Quote
JSngry Posted March 29, 2006 Report Posted March 29, 2006 "The Song Is You" makes the list, although in what position, I can't say. To me, it's usually the bridges that make or break a standard, and this is one of the best. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted March 29, 2006 Report Posted March 29, 2006 "The Song Is You" makes the list, although in what position, I can't say. To me, it's usually the bridges that make or break a standard, and this is one of the best. I forgot Hoagy. You reminded me; the bridge on "Skylark" is just incredible, especially the way Hoagy sang it on his Pacific Jazz album. Better get that out and play it later. MG Quote
marcello Posted March 29, 2006 Report Posted March 29, 2006 Can't forget Stardust.....it always gets me. Quote
bluesbro Posted March 29, 2006 Report Posted March 29, 2006 "Cant get started", this one really does it for me Quote
JSngry Posted March 29, 2006 Report Posted March 29, 2006 "All Or Nothing At All", that's another good one. Quote
JSngry Posted March 29, 2006 Report Posted March 29, 2006 And since we're more than 50 years into it, I'll include a favorite form the "post-rock" era of standards. "Deja Vu". Quote
BruceH Posted March 29, 2006 Report Posted March 29, 2006 "Cant get started", this one really does it for me Yes! One of my favs too. Quote
BruceH Posted March 29, 2006 Report Posted March 29, 2006 ...And "Skylark" is another big favorite, particularly as sung by Anita O'Day! Quote
