Soul Stream Posted March 28, 2006 Report Posted March 28, 2006 I was curious as to what people's favorite Standard was. Not performance of a particular song, ect. Just purely the composition. And for musicians, not your favorite one to play...your favorite to listen to (although it might be the same). Quote
clifford_thornton Posted March 28, 2006 Report Posted March 28, 2006 "Everything Happens to Me" or "The Way You Look Tonight." Quote
Guy Berger Posted March 28, 2006 Report Posted March 28, 2006 probably "On Green Dolphin Street" Quote
Free For All Posted March 28, 2006 Report Posted March 28, 2006 That's a tough call. There are several in that category, and my preference will probably change tomorrow. I love all the tunes already chosen. If I had to choose at this moment, I'd say "Alone Together". If you ask what I'd choose as a "perfectly composed" tune, I'd also have to say "All The Things You Are". I'll probably change my mind tomorrow, or after reading others' choices, or if I hear a specific rendition of a given tune that knocks me out. Quote
tooter Posted March 28, 2006 Report Posted March 28, 2006 Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most is one of my favourites but there are many, many more. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted March 28, 2006 Report Posted March 28, 2006 I think it's got to be a Buddy Johnson song - "Save your love for me" or "Since I fell for you" - or a Percy Mayfield song - "Please send me someone to love" or "The danger zone" - for me. Think I'll go for "Save your love for me". MG Hm there's "Merry Christmas baby" as well... Quote

jazzbo Posted March 28, 2006 Report Posted March 28, 2006 One that really means a lot because I can really relate to it in my personal life is "Come Rain or Come Shine." Quote
brownie Posted March 28, 2006 Report Posted March 28, 2006 Someone to Watch Over Me or... Lush Life Quote
John L Posted March 28, 2006 Report Posted March 28, 2006 Other favorites of mine include Until the Real Thing Comes Along, Darn That Dream, I'm in the Mood for Love, and This Year's Kisses. Quote
sal Posted March 28, 2006 Report Posted March 28, 2006 probably "On Green Dolphin Street" ditto Quote
(BB) Posted March 28, 2006 Report Posted March 28, 2006 You Go To My Head - for personal reasons only. My Favorite Things - I like the tune, but I could go a decade or two with out having to see it sung in the movie. Quote

BruceH Posted March 28, 2006 Report Posted March 28, 2006 All the Things You Are, perhaps? Hard to choose. Quote
Guest Posted March 28, 2006 Report Posted March 28, 2006 Very tough call. If I limit myself to the strict interpretation of "Standards" (ruling out bop tunes), I seem to think about sad tunes that I connected with early in listenning to jazz. What's New? Guess Who I Saw Today Quote
catesta Posted March 28, 2006 Report Posted March 28, 2006 Tenderly is the first to come to mind but I could easily name others. Quote

Larry Kart Posted March 28, 2006 Report Posted March 28, 2006 Alone Together is a gem and made me think of its virtual companion tune, By Myself. Both are Dietz-Schwartz collaborations, the lyricist playing a very important role in both cases I believe -- e.g. "No one knows better/than I/myself I'm/by myself/ alone." I started to list some more, but after What Is This Thing Called Love, The Song Is You, My Shining Hour, Out of This World, and Old Devil Moon, things began to seem ridiculous; there was no end in view. Jim R Posted March 28, 2006 Report Posted March 28, 2006 Like FFA said, I could change my mind soon (maybe not by tomorrow, but soon), and there are MANY that I could choose. Anyway, let's just say these have been high on the list for awhile: A Time For Love Sometime Ago Quote
