jazzbo Posted September 1, 2003 Report Posted September 1, 2003 When I lived in Swaziland one of the most popular bottled drinks. . . turned out to be sortof a buttermilk and orange juice combo. It was really . . . not what you want to give a twelveyearold with a big thirst. . . . But over time, I learned to like it. Life is weird. Quote
vibes Posted September 1, 2003 Report Posted September 1, 2003 I hate to say it . . . I really like tofu. And eggplant. Tofu and eggplant in a brown spicy sauce. . . uh yum yeah! Tofu is GREAT, if it's prepared the right way. I always loved buying fried tofu on the streets of Hong Kong. Even stinky tofu isn't that bad, if you can get past the smell and just eat it. For those who have never heard of it, it has an extremely pungent odor that can be smelled several hundred yards away...and it does stink. Quote
jazzypaul Posted September 1, 2003 Report Posted September 1, 2003 My parents are big health nuts (three heart attacks between the two of them will do that to people...) and they buy low-fat, low carb EVERYTHING. They even drink the Michelob low-carb beer. Well, my mom makes my dad drink it, anyway. Whenever I bring over a six-pack of Modelo Negro, my dad dives in faster than you can say burp. Anyway, in the mix of all of these terrible tasting, good for you foods are these baked veggie chips. They feel and taste like styrofoam. I think you can only find them at places like Whole Foods. If you see them, pass them by. (I'm getting the heebie-jeebies just thinking about them...) Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted November 14, 2003 Author Report Posted November 14, 2003 (edited) Link: Kitty Litter Cake I shit you not!!!! Kitty Litter Cake 1 German chocolate cake mix 1 white cake mix 1 lg. pkg. vanilla instant pudding mix 1 pkg. vanilla sandwich cookies Green food coloring 12 small Tootsie Rolls 1 new kitty litter pan Plastic wrap to line litter box 1 new pooper scooper Directions Prepare cake mixes and bake according to directions (any size pans). Prepare pudding mix and chill until ready to assemble. Crumble white sandwich cookies in small batches in food processor, scraping often. Set aside all but 1/4 c. Add a few drops green food coloring to the 1/4 c. cookie crumbs and mix until completely colored. When cakes are cooled to room temperature, crumble into large bowl. Toss with half the remaining white cookie crumbs and the chilled pudding. Mix in just enough pudding to moisten it. You don't want it soggy. Combine gently. Line new, clean kitty litter box with plastic wrap. Put mixture into litter box. Put three unwrapped Tootsie Rolls in a microwave safe dish and heat until soft and pliable. Shape ends so they are no longer blunt, curling slightly. Repeat with three more Tootsie Rolls and bury in mixture. Sprinkle the other half of cookie crumbs over top. Scatter green cookie crumbs lightly over the top, mimicking chlorophyll in kitty litter. Microwave three Tootsie Rolls until almost melted. Scrape them onto top of the cake; sprinkle with cookie crumbs. Spread remaining Tootsie Rolls over the top; heat until pliable, hang it over the side of the kittle litter box, sprinkling it lightly with cookie crumbs. To serve, place the "litter" box on a newspaper and sprinkle a few of the cookie crumbs around. Edited November 14, 2003 by Rooster_Ties Quote

maren Posted November 14, 2003 Report Posted November 14, 2003 That kitty litter cake is going TOO FAR! I would have drawn the line (in the sand) after this: "Tell your kids to eat dirt!" Oreo Sand & Dirt Cups: Prepare 1 pkg. each (4-serving size) Jell-O Vanilla Instant Pudding and Jell-O Chocolate Instant Pudding separately, with 2 cups each cold milk, as directed on packages. Let stand 5 min. Gently stir 1/2 cup of Cool Whip Whipped Topping into each bowl of pudding. Finely crush 20 Oreo Chocolate Sandwich Cookies, then sprinkle 1 Tbsp. into bottom of 8 (6-oz.) dessert cups. Top each with 1/4 cup vanilla pudding, 1 Tbsp. cookie crumbs and 1/4 cup chocolate pudding. Sprinkle evenly with remaining cookie crumbs. Refrigerate at least 1 hr. or until ready to serve. Insert 2 gummy worms into each dessert cup just before serving. Makes 8 Oreo Sand and Dirt Cups. Quote

Eric Posted November 14, 2003 Report Posted November 14, 2003 (edited) I was in Vegas last weekend and there was a "video billboard" advertising deep-friend Twinkees. They had a video of some hot chick who kept stuffing them in her mouth. Oh well, probably better than downing a bunch of tequilla shots ... Edited November 14, 2003 by Eric Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted November 14, 2003 Report Posted November 14, 2003 One of the reasons English people refuse to stray north of the border to Scotland is this: Deep Fried Mars Bars for USA The media giant AOL Time Warner is sending a TV crew to Stonehaven in Aberdeenshire to make a film about deep fried Mars bars. The "delicacy" is said to have originated in Stonehaven and the Carron Chipper says they sell 200 Mars bars suppers (with chips - French-fried potatoes) a week in the summer. They also deep fry Snickers and even Cadbury Flake. The Food Network who are making the program say that is a "really interesting way to cook food and something quite alien to us. It seems to have developed a cult following with tourists coming back from vacation in Scotland." So that's who's buying all those deep fried Mars bar suppers... Just as well Mick Jagger didn't know about these in the late 60s! Quote
sidewinder Posted November 14, 2003 Report Posted November 14, 2003 (edited) I have a friend from Scotland who actually cooks these things. Serves 'Iron Bru' as a drink to go with it too .. Edited November 14, 2003 by sidewinder Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted November 14, 2003 Report Posted November 14, 2003 Grated Haggis topping? Quote
sidewinder Posted November 15, 2003 Report Posted November 15, 2003 (edited) Grated Haggis topping? I always wondered why those things always smelt of one-week old bad socks when they are served on 'Robbie Burns' night. Just as well that they are served with 'tatties and neeps' to make the taste half-way palatable.. Edited November 15, 2003 by sidewinder Quote
sidewinder Posted November 15, 2003 Report Posted November 15, 2003 Is that Salisbury cathedral at the back of your avitar, Bev? Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted November 15, 2003 Report Posted November 15, 2003 It's the front cover of Fairport Convention's 'Unhalfbricking' - I believe it was taken by the house of one of the band's parents (in the foreground, band behind the fence). That would make the church a bog standard north London job. Does look like Salisbury though. Quote
sidewinder Posted November 15, 2003 Report Posted November 15, 2003 (edited) Amazing what can be done with a wide-angle lens. Didn't recognise the Fairport album cover, I had mistakenly assumed that this was one of your family album shots .. Edited November 15, 2003 by sidewinder Quote
slide_advantage_redoux Posted November 15, 2003 Report Posted November 15, 2003 Near the top of the list of foods I avoid is brussel sprouts. Yes, I know the little suckers are very good for you, but they taste so damn VILE! No matter how they are cooked, they still taste like sht (to me). When served these disgusting bastards in the army, we would stick toothpicks in them and make 'em into alien heads. Also on my list is liver (of ANY animal, thank you very much) And what of that Asian delicacy that I have read about? Monkey brains, eaten from a live monkey?? Shades of Hannibal Lector. (or is it Lecter) Quote
Jazzmoose Posted November 15, 2003 Report Posted November 15, 2003 Near the top of the list of foods I avoid is brussel sprouts. It's strange, but I loved those as a kid. Can't stand 'em now. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted November 15, 2003 Report Posted November 15, 2003 (edited) Brussel sprouts! It's all in the cooking. Boil for a few minutes so they're crisp and still bright green - delicious. I grew up hating them because my parents used to do them in a pressure cooker - mushy and colourless. Dreadful! Totally agree on liver and all forms of offal. Steak and kidney pie. What is that about? Edited November 15, 2003 by Bev Stapleton Quote
Jazzmoose Posted November 16, 2003 Report Posted November 16, 2003 Brussel sprouts! It's all in the cooking. Boil for a few minutes so they're crisp and still bright green - delicious. I'll never understand people who boil veggies to death. My wife used to do that with asparagus, and I hated it. One day I tried steaming it quickly, and it was great. Fortunately, she agreed, so now I don't have to cook it... Quote
