Guest Posted March 25, 2006 Report Posted March 25, 2006 we all have heard the many private recordings that exist of Bird, but as far as film goes, how much exists? is there a lot of amateur film shot of him? how many times was he recorded live?? Quote

Claude Posted March 26, 2006 Report Posted March 26, 2006 (edited) AFAIK, there are two film recordings of Bird. The one linked above, which is a 1950 studio performance called "Jammin'", and a April 1952 TV performance of "hot house" with Dizzy. Too bad Dean Benedetti didn't have a camera Edited March 26, 2006 by Claude Quote
Guest Posted March 27, 2006 Report Posted March 27, 2006 but my question remains unanswered- re: AMATEUR footage... Quote
Claude Posted March 27, 2006 Report Posted March 27, 2006 How many amateurs had film cameras in the early 1950's? Quote

Don Brown Posted March 27, 2006 Report Posted March 27, 2006 Somewhere in the CBC Montreal archives there may still be a half hour kinescope recording of Bird together with Brew Moore and three Montreal musicians. I watched it here in Toronto a couple of weeks after it had been broadcast live in Montreal. Back in those days a kinescope print of live shows would often be sent to other Canadian cities for re-broadcast. Before I retired (I worked for the CBC for 32 years) I tried to track the recording down but with no luck. It may well have been destroyed or lost. Quote

I assume you are aware of the Uptown release, Charlie Parker, Montreal 1953, which has the audio of this appearance. Quote
Guest Posted March 27, 2006 Report Posted March 27, 2006 you worked for the CBC for 32 years?!!?!? Quote
Don Brown Posted March 27, 2006 Report Posted March 27, 2006 Yes, KH1958, I do have the Uptown CD. And, yes, contemporaryladySF, I worked for the CBC from 1957 to 1989 when I took early retirement. Quote
