I am going to be in Accra for 5 weeks from the beginning of April on a temporary assignment. I wonder if anyone has been through Ghana and has any reccomendations on things to see and places to go. From what I understand it is a pretty peaceful place and people are friendly enough.

I am going to pick up some drums there but other than that I have no plans yet.

Advice anyone?

I"ve been a few times, mainly to Accra, but also to the North. Accra is indeed a pretty easy place to travel. English is widely - almost universally - spoken. It's one of the most prosperous places in West Africa. It's not, however, terribly interesting. There are some markets, mainly outside of the centre, worth visiting, just to say you did...and perhaps to squander a few bucks. See if you can squeeze in an easy bus ride to Togo. Lome was much more to my liking. Fewer Western places - fast food and such.

I'd have to look back at some of my travel materials for specific suggestions. PM me, if you want.

By the way, it will be hot.

Portugese built that, I think. Must be horrific inside.

Whichever country held the assiento thereafter took over the use of the castle. For the most part, Europeans weren't allowed into the interior, so that castle served as a kind of evil embassy of sorts.

There is also a gate of "forgetfullness" or something of that nature. The departing slaves (according to today's tourist gab) were marched under the gate in order to irrevokably leave all memories behind.

Thanks for the travel tips. I am in Dubai right now for a 3-hr layover between two 8-hr flights.

The business lounge is nice, don't know whether to stick to coffee, scotch, water or a combination of the three.

Looks like the slaving forts are a main attraction followed by the nature reserves. Not much in the way of Kenya safaris but there are some elephants in the jungle apparently. If I can get my computer and camera to cooperate I might send a pic or two...
