bertrand Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 Here's an article from CNN: http://money.cnn.com/2006/03/21/technology...dex.htm?cnn=yes I'm not sure what it all means. I have a 40-gig which my wife was thinking of taking, and I was going to replace it with the 60-gig model. Personally, I don't really need the video - I just want more gigs. I was hoping they would come up with a 100-gig model, and was waiting a bit. But now, this article makes me think the 60-gig isn't doing so well, so they may not be shooting for more gigs because the demand isn't there. I'm not sure what is better about this alleged new model. How many gigs would it have? What is bluetooth? I suspect it's nothing I need. All I want is to be able to put most of my CDs in there. I don't need anything fancy. Should I just get the 60-gig now before it's too late, or do you guys think more gigs are still on the horizon? Thanks, Bertrand. Quote

Alot of cell phones have them now, and you see the folks walking around with their kinda goofy (IMO) Borg earphone attached, jabbering away. Quote

My guess is that more gigs will always be on the horizon. The recent video iPod's poor use of the front space with a square and small screen makes me think they will hastily lauch new models, and new models will always have to offer greater storage space not to become obsolete too soon. md655321 Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 Even if they are discountinued, they will still be available, and probably cheaper. Here is the last generation (color, no video) for only 300: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebO...0.8.25.7.11.9.3 Quote
Guy Berger Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 An even more important question is why all the video Ipods in the article show SNL skits. Not that I'm complaining. Guy Quote
Claude Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 Bertrand, Why do you want so much capacity on your Ipod? 100gb would make it thicker and heavier. What's the point of having more than 1200 hours of music on a portable player, isn't 300 hours (20GB) enough? I have a 20GB player (iRiver H320) and never felt the need for more capacity. 10GB would probably be enough too. I use it for 3-4 hours per day and replace the albums I have listened to once a week. RDK Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 More rumors: iPod is secretly gay and having an affair with Tom Cruise. Quote

I have a 20 gig and i am very unhappy with the capacity. Witht the amount of music that most of us have, it would be nice to have most of it on the ipod. I listen to mine a couple hours a day, but you never know what you might be in the mood for. I find i have to delete and add albums all the time. I would MUCH prefer 100gb, and when one comes out that will be my next ipod upgrade. 60 isnt even enough for me. And ipods are already small enough, a little thicker or heavier wont bug me at all. Jim Alfredson Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 Wanna talk about lack of storage capacity?!? I've got one of these in my van: I almost hit an old lady crossing the street the other day trying to flip to the B Side of Hank Marr's Greasy Spoon! Quote

I always keep a variety of music on my player, also knowing that I won't feel the need to listen to all of my Miles or Coltrane albums or all of my Mosaic sets in the same week. So there is no point of carrying all of them with me. You also have to be aware of the technological limitations. AFAIK there are currently no 100GB hard drives in the 1.8" format that Ipods uses, and when they become available they will be quite expensive. Fuji, the market leader for 1.8" drives, hopes to be able to launch a 120GB drive by September 2007. That's the current capacity of the biggest laptop hard drives (2.5"). Quote
md655321 Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 i wont be able to afford one until atleast 2007, so thats fine by me! Quote

I wish to carry all of my favorite Coltrane, Bird, Mingus, Ellington, etc. music with me, not only a few selected recordings. The fact that my ipod has all of my favorite Mingus and Bird tracks (i.e., most of their recordings) is a great benefit. The more capacity, the better. Quote

Soulstation1 Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 (edited) i'm confused here if your ipod is stolen, do u throw away all the cds you ripped to it? Edited March 21, 2006 by Soulstation1 Quote
Noj Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 Hell no! The iPod is just a listening device, the CDs are the storage. I play mine at work on a portable iPod stereo. With 4000+ songs on it, there's a lot of variety to play and complete quality control. If I don't like the song, I don't rip it! Quote
vibes Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 I've heard rumors in my world about the next generation of iPods being a complete redesign. What I've heard is that the entire face of the iPod may be a screen, as opposed to the small space with the click wheel. Just a rumor at this point, but it's entirely possible. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 I heard rumors that the original iPod was designed in 1942 in Nazi Germany. It was called Die zweitpodenschtruschledorfenwiezle. Apple just took the "i" from Die and the "pod" from.. uh.. that other big word, updated the electronics, and voila! Quote
Big Wheel Posted March 21, 2006 Report Posted March 21, 2006 My probable new roommate works for Itunes. Maybe I can pump her for info. Quote
bertrand Posted March 22, 2006 Author Report Posted March 22, 2006 Sure, just don't get her fired on my account!!! Bertrand. P.S. Ask her if she can get iTunes to carry 'Zero Gravity', the bonus track from Wayne Shorter's Beyond The Sound Barrier CD, available only in Japan or iTunes from MOST OTHER COUNTRIES Quote

Big Wheel Posted March 24, 2006 Report Posted March 24, 2006 (edited) I just spoke briefly with the roommate last night about this. It turns out that she actually handles a lot of the Japanese ITunes store. Honestly, I wouldn't hold out hope of ever seeing Japan-only tracks in the US store - apparently ITunes has strict rules about this, although I don't really understand why. Maybe one of the Japan-based board members can figure out how to send these tracks to us? I don't use ITunes, so I have no clue how it works, but I'm guessing it's not gonna be as simple as simply sending the files by email. Probably some sort of re-encoding from the analog signal will be necessary. Edited March 24, 2006 by Big Wheel Quote
andybleaden Posted March 27, 2006 Report Posted March 27, 2006 you would have to convert the stuff if it is in that AAC format which I am sure any decent pirate worth a peg leg and eye patch could do. I have got stuff to try from people in that format and converted it but it is a little tricksy There are also anomolies with Itunes UK and elswhere that I never understood or like which is why i never use the thing anymore......too invasive of my system for its own good. I tried again a while back and got even grumpier! As for 6o gb Ipods....I would hang on in there for next generation stuff and get a cheap stand in for now Quote
