Several of the tracks from the King GXF 3060 'Pisces' LP are on the domestic CD issue of 'The Freedom Rider' as additional tracks. These are 'Uptight', 'Pisces' and 'Blue Ching'. The Mosaic 'Complete 1960 Messengers Blue Note' set also includes these plus 'United' and 'Ping Pong'. The last two are also on the domestic CD of 'Roots and Herbs' as additional tracks.

All great tracks by the way, well up to the standard set throughout the mighty fine Blakey Mosaic .. B)

There was one more track, "It's A Long Way Down", on the "Pisces" LP. That track is from the sessions that produced "Indestructible", and was included on the U.S. CD of that album (and will no doubt be on the upcoming reissue in the Ron Van Gelder series - i.e. I can't remember which series it's in). It isn't much of a track - the "Indestructible" LP collection is all you need, and what a collection it is! I have something just as good as the LP: the TOCJ :) .

Ah! - I thought there might have been one more track to make it a nice round '6'. This one isn't listed in the Mosaic booklet, of course. I also have the 'Indistructible' LP and not the CD and agree that it is a killer !!

'Ron Van Gelder' - lots of treble with plenty of compression? :g

I used to have a copy. Sold it for "big bucks".

Scanning through an old copy of Jazz Journal today (circa 1980) I noticed that then-purveyors of Jap vinyl Mole Jazz were listing Pisces 'on special' at £6.25, along with other King goodies like 'Oblique', 'Clubhouse', 'Minor Revelation' and 'Matador' ... :o

Now where's my time machine ? ;)

I still have my King Records copy of "Pisces".

The track order is

Side 1 United/Ping Pong/Pisces

Side 2 Uptight/Blue Ching/It's a Long Way Down

The authorship of 'Blue Ching' is in question.

It sounds like a Bobby Timmons tune, but it appears on the legendary rejected Kenny Dorham BN session (the one with Grant Green), so it may be a Dorham tune.

I hear that.

Look through a Cadence from that era. All the FMP's for chump change.

I have that 'Pisces' King album too. A good Messengers album. The Ping Pong version

is different from the one that was included in the 'Roots and Herbs' album. The Wayne

Shorter solo in the 'Pisces' Ping Pong version is worth the admission price. A stunning

solo where Shorter lays it out!

That 'Pisces' album was part of the treasures that Michael Cuscuna discovered when he

started exploring the BN vaults.

It was issued in 1979/1980. Just for nostalgia freaks, here is the list of albums that

King Japan published at the same time:

Sonny Clark 'Blues in the Night',

Kenny Burrell 'K.B. Blues',

Grant Green 'Matador',

Wayne Shorter 'The Soothsayer',

Dexter Gordon 'Clubhouse',

Sonny Clark 'My Conception',

Kenny Burrell 'Freedom',

Grant Green 'Gooden's Corner',

Wayne Shorter 'The Collector',

Bobby Hutcherson 'Oblique',

Jackie McLean 'Tippin' the Scales',

Bennie Green 'Minor Revelation',Curtis Fuller 'Two Bones',

Grant Green 'Oleo',

Hank Mobley 'Poppin''

Jackie McLean/Tina Brooks 'Street Singer',

Lou Donaldson 'Sweet Slumber'

Those King LPs had superb mastering. I have most of them and their pre-digital sound is

gorgeous.

When I see many board members get all heated up about the current forthcoming releases

from BN, I keep smiling and stay in my corner. And then I remember how I was excited

when those Kings appeared.

If only Andrew Hill's lone "King" issue had seen the light of day...

I think it was to be called "Chained", a still-as-yet-unreleased trio date from about 1967.

(Don't have my discography handy at the moment.)

I agree, I still have most of my King issues. I still recall the excitement when I got those and played them for the first time.

If only....if only....

Brownie, I'm glad some (one?) of us are so blessed! ;)

Now where do you live?

Paris, in La Belle France.

The place where I live is burglar-proof (sort of!!)

Many thanks, John! :tup AMG has track 4 and 5 reversed. I like to know the original album configurations.

While we're at it, does anyone know the LP track order on Jimmy Smith's Special Guests?

AMG has this listing:

1. 'S Wonderful

2. The Blue Room

3. Day In - Day Out

4. Smith Walk

5. Lonesome Road

but according to discographies the track Organic Greeneries was also part of this album.

Back in the old days Cuscuna put me on the King promo list so every couple of months I got a "care package" of Japanese BN lps.

You bastard. ;) It took me about two years to find a copy of "Gooden's Corner"!
