Randy Twizzle Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 In 1956 you could pick up 3 new records in this alphabetized collection every week at Hinky Dinky Supermarkets. Impress your friends and neighbors; have the hippest bomb shelter in the neighborhood Quote
AllenLowe Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 not quite the same thing, but I bought my first Charlie Parker record in a supermarket - one of those Pickwicks's with the Sonny Stitt cut - (That's Earl Brother, I think it was) - Quote
couw Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 I have always found the alphabet an interesting concept. It is full of surprises. Quote
BruceH Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 "Hinky Dinky"---what a name for a supermarket. (And here all this time I thought "Piggly Wiggly" was the funniest.) Quote
DukeCity Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 I like the idea of the Long Playing "Gruve-Gard" records. Quote
Harold_Z Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 I have that set. It's GREAT ! I was about 10 or so and my local supermarket (not Hinky Dinky) had them for 49 cents each. They're 10" lps and the sound is really good on them. I still have them. The recent RCA 80th anniversary cds have most, if not all, of the same material plus some. Those are presented chronologically with one cd for each decade from the 20s through the 90s. Quote
Free For All Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 I like the left-handed trombonist in the picture. Not too many of those around. Quote
Stereojack Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 This series was very helpful to me as a kid learning about jazz in the early 1960's. I've still got my set of 12. Quote
Uncle Skid Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 Cool! I'm listening to Red Allen on Vol 1 right now. My in-laws gave me a stack of old records a few years ago, and this was one of them. Quote
Harold_Z Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 (edited) Cool! I'm listening to Red Allen on Vol 1 right now. My in-laws gave me a stack of old records a few years ago, and this was one of them. Check that cover. With the exception of Mildred Bailey they were all still on the planet in 1956 when this came out. There was a little paper foldover that came in the jacket (no dust covers, by the way) that was a promo for rca jazz albums out at the time. I still have those too. I just left thim in the jackets.
