Jazz Groove Posted July 24, 2003 Report Posted July 24, 2003 I would like to see as many of the remaining giants. I've see Horace Silver, Lou Donaldson. I know Lou is still playing. I know Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock are stillout there. Is Sonny Rollins still playing live? How about any of these? Jackie McLean Jimmy Smith Kenny Burrell Oscar Peterson Elvin Jones Ron Carter Clark Terry Quote
Peter Johnson Posted July 24, 2003 Report Posted July 24, 2003 Saw Sonny Rollins live in Philly a couple of months ago. I'd never seen him live previously--LOVED the show. Saw and met Donald Byrd while he was playing here at a very small club (Ortliebs). First time, he was in great form--played with a mute for a little while, then pulled it out and ripped it up! Second time, not so great...mostly mute, and he relied on electronics and had the keyboard play samples of vocals, which, while amusing ("doin' it in the park...doin' it after dark) turned it into (imho) a slightly sad spectacle. Joe G Posted July 24, 2003 Report Posted July 24, 2003 Ornette Coleman is coming to Ann Arbor early next year. Don't know if you consider him a giant, but Charles Lloyd is out there gigging. Quote
dsgtrane Posted July 24, 2003 Report Posted July 24, 2003 (edited) Don't forget about Roy Haynes who's played with just about everyone. Saw him last year and he played and looked like someone half his age. Edited July 24, 2003 by dsgtrane Quote
brownie Posted July 24, 2003 Report Posted July 24, 2003 Sonny Rollins is making concert appearances in Europe this Summer. He was at the Perugia jazz festival in Italy this week. So was Elvin Jones with his Jazz Machine. Elvin played this Tuesday at the Digne jazz festival in the French Alps. Know that Kenny Burrell and Roy Haynes are still very active. Quote
Aggie87 Posted July 24, 2003 Report Posted July 24, 2003 Paging RDK, Paging RDK: Do not attempt to see these Giants in person. Repeat, do not attempt to see these Giants in person. We want them to stick around a while longer! Quote
brownie Posted July 24, 2003 Report Posted July 24, 2003 Forgot to mention that Oscar Peterson is scheduled to appear at the Marciac jazz festival in southwestern France next week. So is Wayne Shorter. Quote
Alexander Hawkins Posted July 24, 2003 Report Posted July 24, 2003 Cecil Taylor and McCoy Tyner still play! Quote

Mark G Posted July 24, 2003 Report Posted July 24, 2003 Ornette Coleman is coming to Ann Arbor early next year. Don't know if you consider him a giant, but Charles Lloyd is out there gigging. After many years as a fan, I saw Sonny Rollins, too, at an outdoor show a few years ago. He was amazing, almost two and half hours of straight blowing. Alas, there are too few of these "giants" left, and, IMO, no one to replace them. Quote

Templejazz Posted July 24, 2003 Report Posted July 24, 2003 Mickey Roker, though he doesn't do much gigging outside the Philadelphia area. Also Jimmy Cobb...not sure what he's up to lately but I saw him here in Philly about 3 years ago. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted July 24, 2003 Report Posted July 24, 2003 Saw the title of this thread, and well, I'm not sure if they actually are "giants"... ...but there's always these guys... They Might Be Giants Quote
dsgtrane Posted July 24, 2003 Report Posted July 24, 2003 Also, Randy Weston who really IS a giant. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted July 24, 2003 Report Posted July 24, 2003 On January 1, 2000, I posted this to rec.music.bluenote. The discussion was about "first wave bebop" players who were still active but that can get kind of subjective in terms of style. I've slightly edited, removing those who have passed in the interim. ------------------------------- Perhaps if the criterion was that the individual had to begin recording in the 1940's? You might require pre-WWII to narrow things down, or you might require a recorded appearance in the 1990's to prove "active" status - I don't know. Here are a bunch of names with birth dates and the earliest recording dates I could find (without a huge amount of effort - a lot of New Grove material here). I left in some who right now don't meet the criteria for a couple of reasons: someone might know of an earlier debut (sometimes there are radical revisions because of one early recording); and it will stop people asking "what about so-and-so?". Of course there are definitely folks that have been omitted. But it's a start. OK, here's the list, sorted by recording debut - Eddie Bert 1922 1942 Illinois Jacquet 1922 1942 Tony Scott 1921 1943 Buddy DeFranco 1923 1944 Barney Kessel 1923 1944 No longer active Max Roach 1924 1944 Gerald Wilson 1918 1945 Danny Bank 1922 1945 Pete Candoli 1923 1945 Hal McKusick 1924 1945 Conte Candoli 1927 1945 Andre Previn 1929 1945 Abe Most 1920 1946 Dave Brubeck 1920 1946 Buddy Collette 1921 1946 Chico Hamilton 1921 1946 Cecil Payne 1922 1946 Lucky Thompson 1924 1946 No longer active Johnny Griffin 1928 1946 Louie Bellson 1924 1946 Britt Woodman 1920 1946 Lee Konitz 1927 1947 Hank Jones 1918 1947 Marian McPartland 1920 1947 Jimmy Giuffre 1921 1947 No longer active Duke Jordan 1922 1947 Idrees Sulieman 1923 1947 No longer active George Russell 1923 1947 Charlie Mariano 1923 1947 Percy Heath 1923 1947 James Moody 1925 1947 Milt Bernhart 1926 1947 No longer active Anthony Ortega 1928 1947 Yusef Lateef 1920 1948 Terry Gibbs 1924 1948 Jimmy Heath 1926 1948 Jackie Cain 1928 1948 Claude Bolling 1930 1948 Maynard Ferguson 1928 1949 Teddy Charles 1928 1949 Clark Terry 1920 1949 Marshall Allen 1924 1949 Oscar Peterson 1925 1949 Roy Haynes 1926 1949 Doc Severinsen 1927 1949 Don Lanphere 1928 1949 Sonny Rollins 1930 1949 Frank Morgan 1933 1949 Jimmy Cleveland 1926 1950?
