Guest
I'm looking for ALL of the Jimmy Smith titles from Blue Note and Verve specifically that have been issued on MINI-LP format in Japan. I've compiled a list of about 20 or so already, but am looking to fill in the gaps with catalogue and release details. If anyone could help me out I'd be extremely grateful!!! I'm not 100% certain that all of the following have even been issued in this format, but I am certain that at least a handful of them have. These are the titles I'm MOST looking for, and am trying to track down catalogue numbers: Bluesmith - (Has this been released?) The Boss Bucket! Christmas '64 Christmas Cookin' Confirmation - (Has this been released?) Cool Blues Dynamic Duo w/ Wes Montgomery Got My Mojo Workin' Groove Drops Hobo Flats - (Has this been released?) kinuta
I can tell you for a fact that these have not been released on cd in Japan- Bluesmith Hobo Flats Peter & The Wolf Portuguese Soul Groove Drops Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf ? I may be mistaken but wasn't 'Confirmation' released as part of the ' Open House' cd ? I think that a lot of the other titles on your want list are either deleted or only available on lp. Open House Six Views Of The Blues Cool Blues Dynamic Duo Standards I'm Movin' On are probably available here but the only way to find most of them is hauling arse round the used shops. An alternative suggestion is to contact the Japanese retailer recommended by many board members. His name eludes me but look under 'Recent Japanese Releases 'posts or post a request for his contact e-mail address. ' Bluesmith ' is a great set by the way. Good luck and if you need any help with the language just ask me. Edited March 12, 2006 by kinuta

I admit that I haven't heard many of his later albums, but I really don't think he could dissapoint. Kinuta, I know for a fact that Virginia Woolf was indeed released in Japan because I have the remastered mini-LP version of it issued by Universal. I'm sure that a number of the other titles such as Dynamic Duo, Cool Blues, Live Ath The Village Gate, Christmas Cookin', etc must have been released on mini-LP format as well and are likely long oop... but I'd really like to get more info! If anyone could help me with this, I've been trying to compile this list for months, it would be really appreciated!!! I can't seem to find anymore info on Jimmy's imports. I'm sure there's at least one person on this forum who must own one of these CDs. Anyways, any help would be hugely appreciated!!

J.A.W.
The Japanese retailer whose name escapes Kinuta is Hiroshi Tanno in Fukuoka City. His e-mail address is hiroshi@earlyrecords.com. His prices are the Japanese list prices. He accepts PayPal and his overseas shipping rates are very reasonable. Hiroshi can supply all jazz LPs and CDs that are currently available in Japan, and sometimes OOP items. His service is excellent.

Guest
Bluerein, you're the best!!! Thank you so much (and everyone else who posted in this thread!!) One last question... does anyone know the reissue label for Verve in Japan? I was having trouble digging up any Google results with cat. no. "POCJ-9131". Is it from the Universal reissue series and if so, any idea aaprox. when it was released or if it's a 24-Bit remaster? Again, thanks so much - it's taken me months to try and dig up this info unsuccessfully!! ~ Oliver.
Guest
Oop.. I lied - One more question! Christmas Cookin' is essentially just a repackaging of Christmas '64, correct? They're not alternate recordings, outtakes, sessions..? Were both LPs issued the same year, and if so.. why the need for altering the title / release? Was it an international thing? On CD format, would I do better with the US domestic '64 issue on Verve as released October of last year, or the Japanese "Christmas Cookin'" title on Universal (UCCV-3002) from 2004? Do they both source the same remastering job, and are they both packaged in standard jewel cases, didigpaks, etc? I see that the Japanese C.C. issue features 2 bonus tracks... Why don't you try Amazon.co.jp and search "Jimmy Smith Universal" or "Jimmy Smith Verve"?
Guest
Thanks J.A.W. Amazon.co.jp is a struggle to run through, but you were correct about the mastering. It indicates it on Amazon's UK site. Thanks!
Bluerein
Christmas Cooking is a latter reissue of Christmas '64 (on LP that is in the 60's). The CD issue was Christmas Cooking until the latest version in the US which is called Christmas '64. The CC CD has 2 bonus tracks from other LP's so not unissued or alternates. If you have all the other JS Verve CD's available you don't need CC but C'64 will do (and that version has the latest remastering from the Sundazed Studios (Bob Irwing et al.) in 24 Bit (I assume, just as all the new LPR's are). I bet the Japanese CC has the older remastering from the 80's from the Verve CD.
Bluerein
by the way you should use HMV.co.jp Great site in English with all the available versions of everything listed and easy to find.
