montg Posted March 10, 2006 Report Posted March 10, 2006 One of my favorite live recordings is the Red Clay bonus track recorded for CTI and released on the 2002 reissue of Red Clay. Something about the era, the energy that really moves me (btw, does anyone have any familiarity with the Southgate Palace in LA, where the Red Clay recording was made in 1971?). Anyway, I'm curious about how much live stuff from the CTI roster in the early 70s (Turrentine, Hubbard etc) is available in one form or another. Quote
marcello Posted March 10, 2006 Report Posted March 10, 2006 I used to have the Live at the Hollywood Bowl Lp. Not anymore. See this link: Doug Payne - CTI Sessions Quote
kh1958 Posted March 10, 2006 Report Posted March 10, 2006 There's a live version of Sugar on the remastered CD of Stanley Turrentine's "Sugar" that is really good as well. I have a CTI LP, Freddie Hubbard and Stanley Turrentine in Concert, Volume 1, but I recall it as a disappointment. Quote
montg Posted March 10, 2006 Author Report Posted March 10, 2006 Thank you for the link. There are more live recordings than I figured. Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted March 10, 2006 Report Posted March 10, 2006 I've got the "Turrentine/Hubbard: In Concert" CTI on cd. Sounds fine to me, though I haven't heard it in a long time, and should listen to it again. Quote
jodigrind Posted March 10, 2006 Report Posted March 10, 2006 The real winner is "California Concert" recorded 7/18/71 at the Hollywod Palladium. This one includes versions of Red Clay and Sugar that match the energy of the live versions tacked on to the latest reissues mentioned above. Stanley T was on fire that night! The CD reissue has been out of print for quite some time. Another great live track is "It's Too Late" added to Johnny Hammond Smith's Breakout. Quote
brownie Posted March 10, 2006 Report Posted March 10, 2006 Recorded and released in Japan only. Nice 1977 concert with Jackie McLean, Cedar Walton, Sam Jones and Billy Higgins! Quote
jlhoots Posted March 10, 2006 Report Posted March 10, 2006 I used to have the Live at the Hollywood Bowl Lp. Not anymore. See this link: Doug Payne - CTI Sessions I have this as a 2 CD set (Japanese release). MTCJ 4010/ 11 I don't know if it's still available. Quote

frank m Posted March 10, 2006 Report Posted March 10, 2006 I was reminded of the bunch from one of Goodman's sextets who were noodling about together in a recording studio when someone threw the record switch. I heard this impromptu jam session on the radio years ago and just found it newly released on a Goodman cd under the title "Waiting for Benny" Features Georgie Auld and Charlie Christian jamming away together. What could be better? Quote
johnagrandy Posted March 11, 2006 Report Posted March 11, 2006 (edited) That bonus "Red Clay" track is definitely remarkable ... I love the studio "Red Clay" ... but the live version is just as good in a different way. The rock 'n funk vibe is pumped-up (Cobham might be key to this). Interesting that Turrentine's funky but simple solo gets more cheering-on than Hub , who was positively smoking ! What I'd love to hear is the complete Hollywood Palladium concert: nearly the same line-up as at Southgate Palace, but includes both "Red Clay" and "Straight Life" ... however the OOP CD is $70 ... and "Straight Life" was never released -- but apparently could be. Southgate Palace Freddie Hubbard (tp); Stanley Turrentine (ts); Hubert Laws (f); Johnny Hammond (el-p, org); George Benson (el-g); Ron Carter (b); Billy Cobham (d); Airto Moriera (perc). CJ Shearn Posted March 14, 2006 Report Posted March 14, 2006 johnagrandy, I agree. I have the California Concert CD which I've had for maybe 12 years or so. Though my favorite is "CTI Summer Jazz At The Hollywood Bowl" I am soooo lucky to have been able to buy that in the CD version jlhoots mentioned earlier in the thread. If Sony wanted to they could reissue the California Concert on a 2 disc set, recovering the omitted Leaving West(which could have fit on the original CD) and adding the remaining cuts that are unissued. I'd like to know if there are any unissued tapes from other performances of the '72 CTI All Stars sans the overdubs that are on the "Hollywood Bowl" albums. Quote
DMP Posted March 16, 2006 Report Posted March 16, 2006 "Leaving West," which was cut from the CD issue, showed up on a "Best of.." Stanley Turrentine release, so the whole double album has been out (in a convoluted way). Quote
PHILLYQ Posted March 17, 2006 Report Posted March 17, 2006 I seem to recall(IIRC) a live album that had Herbie Hancock and Jack Dejohnette on it and they did a somewhat funky version of a cut from Sextant(Hornets?). Anyone else remember that one? Quote
