Hardbopjazz Posted March 8, 2006 Report Posted March 8, 2006 I came across a live date of Booker Little. There is so little little out there. The CD is called "Live in NYC." April 1960. The label is Jazz View. Are they a legit record label? Quote
doubleM Posted March 8, 2006 Report Posted March 8, 2006 (edited) Can you post the line-up, date, etc.? Some of these that I have seen are/have been released under different names (i.e., "Ted Curson w/ Eric Dolphy" on JazzView, I believe was "Cattin' Curson"). If you don't have the tracks elsewhere, it might be work grabbing if it's not too steep. Edited March 8, 2006 by doubleM Quote
couw Posted March 8, 2006 Report Posted March 8, 2006 to answer the question: probably only under Italian law. Italy had a very liberal copyright law and was very lenient towards bootleggers until the late 90s. There still might be some clause that allows for unofficial recordings like radio broadcasts and audience recordings to be pressed and sold in Italy, I don't know. Quote

doubleM Posted March 8, 2006 Report Posted March 8, 2006 Oh yeah, he did ask that question. I think that Booker Little title might have been released under a different name, on a more legit label. It might even be the one w/ Teddy Charles. to answer the question: probably only under Italian law. Italy had a very liberal copyright law and was very lenient towards bootleggers until the late 90s. Allmusic.com has the Booker Little as COD 28. They must have it listed wrong. Quote
JohnS Posted March 8, 2006 Report Posted March 8, 2006 Avoid the Booker Little/Teddy Charles on Jazz View. The sound is awful. Quote

robviti Posted March 9, 2006 Report Posted March 9, 2006 (edited) i think you got the title wrong. the correct title is booker little in new york, april 1960. i don't believe this is a live date at all. it's a poor copy of a studio recording issued on the time label that includes these two sessions: Booker Little Quartet Booker Little (tp) Tommy Flanagan (p) Scott LaFaro (b) Roy Haynes (d) NYC, April 13, 1960 Opening Statement Time M 52011 Minor Sweet - The Grand Valse - Who Can I Turn To? - * Booker Little (Time M 52011, S 2011) Booker Little Quartet Booker Little (tp) Wynton Kelly (p) Scott LaFaro (b) Roy Haynes (d) NYC, April 15, 1960 Bee Tee's Minor Plea Time M 52011 Life's a Little Blue - * Booker Little (Time M 52011, S 2011) Edited March 9, 2006 by jazzshrink Quote
JohnS Posted March 9, 2006 Report Posted March 9, 2006 (edited) The Booker Little/Teddy Charles is the Museum of Modern Art set originally on Warwick. Presumably the Fresh sound version is acceptable. All the Jazz View titles I've heard have been rather poor copies from vinyl. So best to treat this label with extreme caution. Most of the music is available elsewhere I suspect. Edited March 9, 2006 by JohnS Quote
