jazztrain Posted May 27, 2011 Report Posted May 27, 2011 From the notes: >>> A sideman date for Flip. Guitarist Nick Esposito, a San Franciscan, had previously recorded for samll California labels, and was best known for a 1945 session he led on Pacifc that included Barney Bigard. Indeed he seems to have been an Ellington fancier -- this was the third time he'd recorded EMPTY BALLROOM BLUES,a little riffer concocted by Duke and Cootie Williams for a 1938 Johnny Hodges date. He leads the ensemble, kicks off his solo with a break, and plays with a somewhat steel-guitarish sound and phrasing. On Don Redman's CHERRY, the guitar-led ensemble voicing is more effective. Esposito takes the first and bridge and leads off the solo order, again a bit twangy. There's a typically sinuous Benny Green bridge, and Flip has the next eight to himself before the leader resumes. This is the best work from the session, but SAN FRANCISCO BLUES plays out at a nice pace, with solo spots for Oscar Peterson, in his first appearance on this set (he takes two), and Flip and Bennie for one each, after which Espo picks for two. The concluding LOVE IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER has a nicely crafted intro, more guitar-led ensemble, swinging Peterson (already himself), more guitar, another bridge for Flip, still more guitar, and a concluding ensemble that recalls the Goodman Sextet's A SMOOTH ONE. (Esposito seems to have disappeared from the recording scene after this brief moment in the spotlight). >>> The timing for Empty Ballroom Blues is (2:33). mikeweil Posted May 27, 2011 Report Posted May 27, 2011 Thanks much - the Esposito version of Empty Ballroom Blues I have on Four Star 1294 (a 10 inch 78 rpm record) runs over 5 minutes and is in two parts spread over both sides, so it must be adifferent version. I'm asking because the common discographies list it as recorded in May 1949 with basically the same personnel as the session on which Tjader plays bongos, but the saxist does not the least sound like Claude Gilroy, who is a "brother", and the bassist sings along with his bowed solo - in fact he sounds a lot like Slam Stewart. Some discographical mystery, it seems ... Quote
king ubu Posted June 8, 2011 Report Posted June 8, 2011 I don't have my discographies with me, but I don't understand why you're asking this in the Flip Phillips thread then... it's not Flip on your version then, and there's no Tjader on the Esposito session with Flip (or the whole Flip Mosaic)... your basic question was to try and find out if your single version is the one with Flip from the Mosaic, I gather? And who's Claude Gilroy? Never even heard his name! Just found your old thread which has prompted this all... Fascinating! Quote
mikeweil Posted June 8, 2011 Report Posted June 8, 2011 ... your basic question was to try and find out if your single version is the one with Flip from the Mosaic, I gather? Exactly! Very obviously they're different. The Mosaic Box booklet states Esposito cut three versions of that tune, but I doubt they ever listened to the 4 Star 78, as this is an extremely rare record. They trusted the Jepsen disco, which must be mistaken, as I now own two sides from the Tjader bongo session he doesn't even list, and can confirm the 4 Star record of Empty Ballroom Blues must be from a different session. The tenor on that take could well be Flip Philips ... And who's Claude Gilroy? Never even heard his name! The way he sounds he was from the Brothers school - according to Lord this is the only session he ever recorded! Some pseudonym, maybe? Fascinating indeed! I was contacted by Esposito's son more than a year ago, but never heard from him again, neither did Tjaderbiographer - too bad, as he claimed to have digital files of all of his father's records - that's why I continued to look for these 78's. Meanwhile, a nephew or something like that of Esposito living in Italy contacted me - I will send him a copy of my transfers, as he wants to make them available on the web. I will place a link on this forum once they are out. Quote
Niko Posted June 8, 2011 Report Posted June 8, 2011 (edited) don't think Gilroy is a pseudonym, it was easy to be on the SF jazz scene without becoming a big name; there's a Claude Gilroy (died Pacific Grove, Monterey, CA) in the Social Security Death index, 1928-2003, which seems plausible; and here's a guy from the area who says he played drums with him: http://www.mbay.net/~ndys/article.html see also here: http://nl.newsbank.com/nl-search/we/Archives?p_product=MC&s_site=montereyherald&p_multi=MC&p_theme=realcities&p_action=search&p_maxdocs=200&p_topdoc=1&p_text_direct-0=0FD2210172126C96&p_field_direct-0=document_id&p_perpage=10&p_sort=YMD_date:D&s_trackval=GooglePM seems to be the guy... Some discographical mystery, it seems ... So this one here (2-part version, too) .... ... definitely is not the same version as on the 4-Star label?? Though recording the same tune in a 2-part version in each case is odd indeed. Ths would make it the third version of the three that Mosaic mentions. Jepsen says these are different versions, but like you said, he may have been mistaken, so who knows?? Especially as you claim the 4-Star recording seems to come from a different session if I got you right. Am playing it now - the tenor man blows a relatively fierce horn (not unlike what Flip Phillips did) and the bassist does hum some Slam-Stewart-ish lines behind the guitar solo towards the end of Pt. I and later on in his his solo in Pt. II. @all: Sorry for derailing this thread even further ... Edited June 9, 2011 by Big Beat Steve Quote

I need to hear that Pacific version - chronologically it was the first, if one can trust the discos. But: the 4 Star version, too, has a bowed bass solo with humming along that made me think of Slam Stewart! Was there any other bassist at this time humming along (Major Holley came later and sounds different. In addition, the pianist sounds a bit like Oscar Peterson and the tenor like Flip.of course - that Pacific label is not related to the later Pacific Jazz of Richard Bock. So maybe 4 Star bought these masters? I need to hear that and compare - can you make an MP3 of that Pacific version? I will upload mine next week and post a link. mikeweil Posted July 2, 2012 Report Posted July 2, 2012 Up - I need to to answer these questions about the Empty Ballroom Blues versions soon as we have a September deadline for the discographical researches. Big Beat Steve Posted July 2, 2012 Report Posted July 2, 2012 Sorry - I NEVER saw your posts of June 2011 as they arrived while I was on our annual holiday and of course I never got around to catching up on all posts that had been posted in all these forum sections in the meantime. Contact me by MAIL and we will see what can be done ... Quote
mikeweil Posted July 5, 2012 Report Posted July 5, 2012 Big Beat Steve sent me a copy of his Pacific 603 shellac - and as I expected, this is identical to the version on 4 Star 1294. So the Nick Esposito discography needs to be corrected, and this item of course must be removed from the Cal Tjader discography. Thanks a lot to Steve! Quote
