GA Russell Posted March 5, 2006 Report Posted March 5, 2006 A few months ago I got a new album by a New Orleans group named Kermit Ruffins and the Rebirth Brass Band, called Throwback. When it arrived in the mail I decided to wait until Mardi Gras day to open it up, which I did on Tuesday. This is a good album! There are two songs which I have omitted in my burn copy for the car, but other than those it's exciting. There's no doubt this is a New Orleans band. The sound is somewhere between Louis Armstrong and Louis Prima. Lots of tuba! It's a party record, for sure. The label is called Basin Street Records, which is a New Orleans company. I get emails from them every week. The owner has relocated to Austin, Texas, and in his emails urges everyone to contact the politicians, to vote, etc., to get New Orleans rebuilt promptly. Anyway, from time to time I have picked up New Orleans records, and for the most part I don't think they are very good. But this one I can recommend. Has anybody else heard this? Quote
sheldonm Posted March 5, 2006 Report Posted March 5, 2006 I don't have the cd but I have heard a few clips of it. Not really my thing but if you like the New Orleans party vibe, it'll probably work for you! m~ Quote
jazzbo Posted March 5, 2006 Report Posted March 5, 2006 It's a good cd indeed! It took me a while to really appreciate Kermit, but over the last few years I have. And the Rebirth I appreciate right away, swinging party vibe. Quote
medjuck Posted March 5, 2006 Report Posted March 5, 2006 Kermit is no longer with Re-Birth but I saw him sit in with them at Joe's (?) in NO a couple of years ago. Great fun. Quote
chris olivarez Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 Count me as a fan. I saw him when he was still with Rebirth. It was a blast. Quote
