Big Wheel Posted July 23, 2003 Report Posted July 23, 2003 When my local HMV closed it doors in May I was able to scoop up a few nice discs for about $4 each. One of them was Marc Cary's "Trillium", a piano trio with Tarus Mateen and Nasheet Waits. Because of the presence of Mateen and Waits, comparisons with Jason Moran are inevitable. Cary's got more McCoy Tyner and less Andrew Hill in him, so the compositions aren't quite as intriguing, but the playing is great, very spirited. Does anyone know if he's working as a leader these days? I noticed that he's been on the Roy Hargrove electric album that just came out as well as a similar effort by Russell Gunn, but that's about it for the last year or so. Quote
Cali Posted July 23, 2003 Report Posted July 23, 2003 I'd like to hear more from Cary. One of my favorites. He has a lot of Bobby Timmons in him. As good as he is, it's a mystery why he's so seldom seen or heard from. Quote
Alexander Posted July 23, 2003 Report Posted July 23, 2003 Marc Cary is currently a member of Blackout, a new fusion band led by Stefon Harris. They are touring now, and plan to be in the studio by fall. Quote
Late Posted July 23, 2003 Report Posted July 23, 2003 If you like Betty Carter, check out Cary on Carter's Droppin' Things. Some of the hippest (and left-hand only, I think) comping I've heard. Quote
B. Goren. Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 (edited) In 2006 I had the pleasure to see Marc Cary playing with Stefon Harris and I was really impressed by his playing. I don’t know why I had to wait another 3 years until I picked up one f his CDs. "Trillium" is a great piano trio and I really enjoy it. I definitely need more Marc Cary's recordings in my collection. Kevin Bresnahan Posted February 3, 2010 Report Posted February 3, 2010 I really like "The Antidote" on Arabesque, but then again, I'm probably digging it because I really like Ron Blake. Quote
