NFL 2006 - Offseason/Draft/Free Agency

Well, the NFL Combine is going on right now, in preparation for the draft coming up April 29/30...

* There's something fishy going on with Vince Young at the combine. He took the Wonderlic test, which is supposed to be an 'intelligence' test. The stories going around are that he scored a 6 on the test. A score of 20 is supposed to show "average" intelligence, with 50 being the highest possible score.

The odd thing about this is that Young's agent is denying that he scored a 6....and yet Young was allowed to take the test again, and on the second go-round scored a 16. It doesn't make sense to me - if he didn't score a 6, why did he take the test again?

Contrasting this score, Texas A&M's Reggie McNeal is reported (by ESPN Radio) to have scored a 41. Granted, he also didn't lead his team to the National Championship. He also ran a 4.37 40, and had a good showing in the Shrine Bowl last month. (yes, i'm rooting for him to make it in the pros!).

* #1 pick trade - Rumors are that the Jets are looking to trade up from the #4 spot to get the Texan's #1 overall pick. Looks like they're interested in Matt Leinart. Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

* There are also rumors that the Jets are trading John Abraham to the Redskins for Lavar Arrington & Patrick Ramsey.

......5 1/2 months until preseason!!!!

Owners break off talks

No agreement on contract, mass player dump ahead?

NEW YORK (AP) -- NFL owners voted unanimously Thursday to break off talks with the players' union on a contract extension, leaving the current salary cap in place with the start of free agency looming -- and possibly forcing the mass dumping of veterans.

"The situation is about as dire as dire can be," commissioner Paul Tagliabue said.

The owners, who met for 57 minutes Thursday morning, endorsed a recommendation by their management council executive committee to reject the union's latest proposal.

The breakdown of talks left intact, for now, a salary cap of $94.5 million. The two sides had hoped to add $10 million to $15 million to the 2006 salary cap. Without the additional room, some teams could be forced into wholesale cuts to get beneath the cap by midnight. Free agency starts Friday.

Without an agreement, 2006 will be the last season with a salary cap -- under the current contract, 2007 is scheduled to be an uncapped year.

Owners did not seem inclined to cut into the difference of 4 percentage points between the sides. New England owner Robert Kraft had suggested that Thursday morning's meeting might be short, just enough time to rubber stamp the executive committee's decision.

That's exactly what the owners did.

"The players are totally out of bounds," said Dallas owner Jerry Jones. Most of the other owners declined comment, unusual in a league where many are eager to express their opinion.

Gene Upshaw, the executive director of the NFL Players Association, said he expected the move by the owners. He said it was unlikely that talks would resume soon, although some league officials suggested anything could happen.

But the two sides remain far apart -- according to Upshaw, the union wants a little over 60 percent of the league's total revenue, the owners are offering 56.2 percent.

"I won't come down," Upshaw said Thursday. "The players know that. Only the owners can make a proposal."

That is unlikely to happen.

"They have to make a fundamental change in their proposal in how they are defining their expectations for the players," Tagliabue said.

Beyond the numbers is an issue that has divided the owners for two years -- revenue sharing among the teams.

Under the current system, some teams make far more than others in ancillary income, ranging from local radio rights to stadium naming rights and advertising. The lower-revenue teams say that forces them to commit as much as 70 percent of that money to the players while teams with more outside money contribute far less, giving the high-revenue teams more available cash for upfront bonuses to free agents.

An uncapped year in 2007 means new rules that will force teams and agents to change their plans this year and could keep a lot of teams out of the free-agent market entirely. More will have to cut players to meet the cap because they negotiated long-term deals anticipating an extension of the union contract.

A few teams do have room, notably Arizona, Cleveland and Minnesota, all relatively low spenders in the past. Washington, which has thrown money at free agents since Daniel Snyder bought the team in 1999, may be in the deepest cap trouble.

"It might mean that no rookies get signed because no one is sure of the long-term ramifications," said Tom Condon, the agent for a number of the game's top players.

The ramifications of a lower than anticipated cap were evident Wednesday, when some high-priced veterans were cut. Among them were defensive end Trevor Pryce and running back Mike Anderson of Denver, the team's leading rusher last season. Denver also cut tight end Jeb Putzier.

Buffalo, meanwhile, released defensive tackle Sam Adams and Carolina released three veterans: running back Stephen Davis, defensive tackle Brentson Buckner and kicker returner Rod Smart, "He Hate Me" of old XFL days.

Miami cut left tackle Damion McIntosh, saving $3.8 million against the cap, and former Pro Bowl cornerback Sam Madison. The Dolphins are a prime example of a team that needs a new labor agreement: They are estimated to be about $9 million over a $95 million cap.

Besides the lower cap this season, if no agreement is reached then 2007 is an uncapped year, so teams can pay whatever they want. This could tilt the balances towards the big money teams, as an owner like Snyder in DC could go hogwild like a football version of Steinbrenner. The vaunted competitive balance would just disappear, and you may have teams analagous to the KC Royals in baseball, low budget teams that are just cannon fodder and developmental teams for the big boys.

Patriots will lose some players to teams led by Belichick's former assistants.

Case in point will be Cleveland and Romeo Crennel. Look for them to make big offers for Willy McGinnest and David Givens. My only hope is that the Browns will focus more on Trevor Pryce, while Willie can re-sign w/ the Pats.

Don't know if Mangini and the Jets are in a position to chase anybody with their screwed up finances.

NFL network says that the Vikes have already worked out a trade agreement to ship Culpepper. They did not mention the team, but it's not Oakland!

Could it be Miami?

Well the owners & union came to their agreement, and free agency is set to start tonight at midnight EST. Who is your team going after?

I've read more and more things about the Cowboys going after Terrell Owens, which if it turns out that way will really disappoint me. i don't care how talented that guy is, I will never acknowledge him after all he's done. I hope they pick up a quality free safety and address the offensive line. Maybe a linebacker (Lavar Arrington?), after Dat Nguyen's surprising and sad retirement. That guy was the epitome of an overachiever, all heart and guts.

I certainly hope the Cowboys don't sign T.O.--that would be a big disappointment. They do have $23 million of cap space, so expect a few free agent signings.

I'd like to have McGinest.

T.O. was released today. I'm nervous, because the Cowboys haven't made their "big splash" signing yet. They signed an O-line guy from Detroit (Kyle Kosier, who I've never heard of), and LB Akin Ayodele from Jacksonville.

Cowboys released Keyshawn Johnson today, so they have some needs at WR. Seems like they're setting themselves up to get Owens. They also need a kicker, and Vinatieri's agent is Rosenhaus (T.O.'s agent)....maybe there's a package deal afloat...

The Browns are making some good moves so far. LeCharles Bentley is a major addition that should help "beef up" that offensive line...and we all saw what Joe Jurevicious can still do last year in Seattle.

I'm shaking my head over the Brees thing...I mean, more power to the guy and it's GREAT news for the Saints, but I just don't understand why the Chargers didn't sign him and trade Phillip Rivers for a host of good picks. You have a proven playmaker...then you have a very expensive but still unproven QB who has hardly taken any snaps since entering the NFL.

Lastly...the Redskins are making me ill with their money-spending frenzy. I know that the Skins are the most profitable team in the NFL...I wonder by how large a margin?

I don't see how any Dallas fan can stomach TO after this...

and this....

But as they say, winning changes everything. So I guess it will be okay if they win the Super Bowl.... But I don't see them doing that next year.

Adam V. leaves Pats to go to the ENEMY!

This dude better age fast! He'll screw up all his kicks since there's no snow blowing.

(Are the Patriots ever gonna spend any of that $20 million cap room? :o )

I figured a week ago that they were waiting for Eric Moulds. Seems risky to wait for a player or two. Too much damned competition in free agency.

One by one, the clutch components are crumbling off the Pats victory machine. :g

We're taking a heavy hit this free agency for sure. This cannot be denied.

Of course, you can look at all the losses individually, and realize that Belichick and company had likely decided ahead of time to let these people go. Willie Mac is 34. Adam V. is 33, and may not be as great of a clutch player as he had been. David Givens is in his prime, but they never had any intention of paying the huge salary he was likely to get in free agency. The other losses so far represent bench players or special teamers.

On the other hand, starting right guard, Stephen Neal hasn't yet been signed by anybody. Pats should make some kind of a move to keep him.

The local pundits are claiming that the Patriot head brass pretty much expected the above losses. On the other hand, they were clearly outmaneuvered by the Steelers when Deshea Townsend re-signed with Pittsburgh. NE was clearly targetting him.

They were probably also surprised in losing Adam V, though he's just a kicker and has likely seen his best days. It hurts in the sense that they have to fill a kicker void. I think they are more bothered by that than the fact that they lost Adam to bigger money.

In the end, though this is looking like a bad free agency for them, final judgement will be cast once it is over; for again, they've got $20 million still to spend; and many teams will be releasing more players at training camp.

i hope TO leaves Big D like he left San Fran and Philly

:)

I dont think jerry and, especially bill, will have patience with T.O. if he starts to act up again. he's a known quantity and, as they've just proven with keyshaun and larry allen, they have one goal and wont let anyone interfere. jerry and bill want another superbowl and they hear the tick tick tick loudly echoing in their ears.

I think they believe they have 2 years to get it done and think T.O. can get them there. if he doesnt play ball in that regard, he's gone before he can embarrass the team more than once. which I think is the number of chances they'll give him. I'll bet jerry made that part of the deal.

if he screws up, they throw him out with the bath water.

Well....he's 31 for 31 indoors during the regular season so I think he'll be ok!
