Guest akanalog
are any of the live jackie mclean discs on steeplechase particularly strong? any stand out as superlative? it's tough to choose.
Chas
My favorite live Mclean is this one : It's run close by it's companion from the same concert , Tune Up . Jackie just tears it up ; great music .

Guest akanalog
oh. so this isn't helping pare things down! 3 discs recommended already! hehe
Chuck Nessa
I'm going to confuse things further by suggesting "A Ghetto Lullaby" and the two with Dexter. I'd suggest hearing a bit of "Dr Jackle" and "Tune Up" before buying - the sound is a bit rough, but the playing is fine indeed.
clifford_thornton
The Montmartre disc is pretty heavy. Used to have an original flipback LP of it, but the cover was jacked so it became expendable. Probably should have kept it, though... Guest akanalog
hmmm. the 60's dates interest me just because BN didn't do too much documenting of their main men in live settings besides blakey and smith and green.
JSngry
Yeah, the 60s stuff is pretty damn intense.
bertrand
Chuck is being way too generous - the sound on the two Left Bank Jazz Society sets is actually quite bad - distorted piano, nasal alto etc. It's especially problematic when applied to Jackie's unique tone - it really sounds 'off'. The playing is great, but I really have trouble listening to these too often. Montmartre and the two Dexters are fabulous; Lullaby is only 'very good'. Bertrand. sidewinder
A good reminder for me to bring out the 'Live at the Montmatre' vinyl later today.

JSngry
Sorry, but the sound on the Left Bank stuff doesn't bother me at all. I've heard, and enjoyed, far worse...
jazzbo
Yes me too. And though not really relevant in this thread I really dig the stuff with Bartz.
HolyStitt
The sound on 'Tune Up' and 'Dr. Jackle' is not perfect, but I think they are worth buying. If you can sit through the sound problems with most of Bird's live recordings, the sound problems on CDs shouldn't be that much of an issue. I really like these discs because it is great to hear Scotty Holt and Lamont Johnson performing with McLean on a variety of tunes that the group did not record in the studio. The only Jackie LP/CD I haven't been able to listen to is 'Monuments.' I have tried to listen to it for kitsch value, but even than it's too painful.
