mikeweil Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 The Pres Aladdin CD says it was written by a team Miller-Krueger-Conn-Styne. Quote
ghost of miles Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 Jules Styne was one of the writers. It was his first hit, though he didn't have another for nearly 15 years. Quote
Stereojack Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 contemporaryladySF said: does anyone know any versions of this standard, and also who wrote it/1st played it? thanks Chester Conn - Bennie Krueger - Ned Miller - Jule Styne The song is copyrighted 1926. Jean Goldkette made a recording of it that year, so he may be among the first. Quote
Nate Dorward Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 When I look at a credit like that, the question that occurs to me is, "OK, so who REALLY wrote it, & who just stuck his name on?" Quote
marcello Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 One thing I know: Bennie Krueger was a early saxophone virtuoso and led a orchestera in the 20's. Quote
brownie Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 Couple of favorite versions: - Gerry Mulligan and Ben Webster on Verve (The Complete Sessions reissue includes two takes of the song), - Coleman Hawkins and Confreres (Verve), one of the confrere on this 'Sunday' is Roy Eldridge! bertrand Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 (edited) They all sat down together with pencils and locked the door and didn't come out again until the song was done. It was a true collaborative effort. They don't make songwriting teams like that anymore. Bertrand. Edited February 20, 2006 by bertrand Quote
brownie Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 Thought it was Sonny Rollins... Quote
Parkertown Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 Aren't there versions by Bill Evans, too? Quote
