Alec Posted February 16, 2006 Report Posted February 16, 2006 After seeing these album covers in another thread , I became curious. How are they? Allmusic doesn't think much of them, but come on, it's Chet Baker!! how about a select? Anyone heard these? Are they just Herb Alpert ripoffs? 1964 A Taste of Tequila World Pacific 1965 Hats Off!!! World Pacific 1966 Double Shot World Pacific 1966 In the Mood World Pacific Quote
GA Russell Posted February 16, 2006 Report Posted February 16, 2006 (edited) Chet had one hit with this studio band - a cover of the Statler Brothers' Flowers on the Wall. I remember Dick Clark playing that song once on American Bandstand, and saying "Chet Baker" as if everyone had heard of him. LOL! Only kids watched that show, and we didn't know Chet Baker. Anyway, I have two of the LPs you listed, both of which I picked up used for a buck - Hats Off!! and In the Mood. In answer to your question, yes, they are just Herb Alpert ripoffs. But in my view they are excellent rip offs. They are adult pop music, not jazz. They get sneered at because they are what they are, not because they were done poorly. If you like Herb Alpert and Chris Botti, I think you will like these too. edit: By the way, another song, included on In the Mood I think, became more widely known than Flowers on the Wall, and that is the closing theme to The Dating Game, which as I recall was written by Chuck Barris. DMP Posted February 17, 2006 Report Posted February 17, 2006 I think at that point Pacific Jazz (or World Pacific - they pretty much ran together by then) was trying anything - Bud Shank doing albums of Beatles and Rolling Stones covers, Joe Pass and voices doing Petula Clark - jazz was about to be down for the count about then, but Richard Bock went down swinging. Most of it has disappeared in the CD era, except for a stray track or two (although the Pass has surfaced). I had all the Bakers, they were pretty sad. Quote
Alec Posted February 17, 2006 Author Report Posted February 17, 2006 I have to admit I have a fondness for that kind of cheese. I bought all the Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass reissues (and love them) as well as the Baja Marimba Band. Therefore I'll have to check these out. Thanks everyone. Quote

Jim R Posted February 17, 2006 Report Posted February 17, 2006 I don't think I ever took the plunge (maybe somebody warned me ). At any rate, if it feels good, do it, and more power to 'ya. Quote
JSngry Posted February 17, 2006 Report Posted February 17, 2006 Dick Bock was on smack? Apparently so. Let's do the math - D I C K B O C K = O N S M A C K Assign each letter a numerical value of its position in the alphabet, and we get: 4 9 3 11 2 15 3 11 = 15 14 19 13 1 3 11 Now, let's add: 4+9+3+11+2+15+3+11 = 15+14+19+13+1+3+11 58 = 76 Add again: 5+8 = 7+6 13 = 13 And to remove all doubt: 1+3 = 1+3 4 = 4 Therefore, Dick Bock was indeed on smack. GA Russell Posted March 4, 2007 Report Posted March 4, 2007 In answer to your question, yes, they are just Herb Alpert ripoffs. But in my view they are excellent rip offs. They are adult pop music, not jazz. They get sneered at because they are what they are, not because they were done poorly. I pulled out my two Mariachi Brass albums today, and I was struck by the difference in their quality. Given that they are pop, not jazz...Hats Off might rate five stars. In the Mood is strictly two stars. Listening to the vintage mid-60s songs on Hats Off was fun! Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted March 4, 2007 Report Posted March 4, 2007 pacific jazz records had balls and they made all kinds of great w.c.j: from flute n oboe to bebop quartet to big band all the way to jazz-pop and even prototypical jazz-rock albums. the best of which is gerald wilson/equinox.
