king ubu Posted February 15, 2006 Report Posted February 15, 2006 Sorry for being a bit short (not rude, I hope) on the other thread - but of late there's been quite some threads started in wrong forums, so... Needless to say I can't help answering your question, otherwise I would have done so already! Quote
AllenLowe Posted February 15, 2006 Report Posted February 15, 2006 those are late recording from Europe - Copenhagen, I think - and were originally on Black Lion but have been reissued in a lot of places - Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted February 15, 2006 Report Posted February 15, 2006 Don Byas (ts) Bent Axen (p) Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (b) William Schiöpffe (d) Live, "Jazzhus Montmartre", Copenhagen, January 13-14, 1963 Quote
brownie Posted February 15, 2006 Report Posted February 15, 2006 Several titles from those Montmartre evenings originally came out on the Danish Debut label. Latest legitimate incarnation are on the Black Lion 24-bit remastered editions. The Black Lion 'A Night in Tunisia' CD has several of the titles with Byas in splendid form throughout plus excellent sound! Quote
AllenLowe Posted February 15, 2006 Report Posted February 15, 2006 interesting period for Byas - he was a bit bitter at not having gotten credit for "modern" developments, and for his influence on people like Coltrane and so trying to play in a more "contemporary" way - there is a real strain in his playing here, as he works hard to sound "boppish," as his time is not quite right, though his ideas are brilliant - I remember seeing him, about this time, on Public TV (he had come back to the states to appear at Newport, I think) - I would love to see that show again, don't know if it still exists. EKE BBB Posted February 15, 2006 Report Posted February 15, 2006 From a bit later (1968), this MPS disc (a favourite of mine, and not only because Tete Montoliu leads the rhythm section) shows a beautiful contrast between Webster and Byas´ styles: Quote

I have the audio of that TV show and I suspect that lots of other people have it by now as I seeded it (thanks to Dan Gould who transferred my open reel tape to CD-R) on one of the jazz vine forums this past year. Details are as follows: "JUST JAZZ" TV broadcast, Chicago c1971: Don Byas, ts Jodie Christian, p Rufus Reid, b Wilbur Campbell, d 1) unknown title 2) Tenderly 3) Autumn Leaves 4) Stella By Starlight 5) But Not For Me Edited February 16, 2006 by MartyJazz Quote

Caravan Posted September 10, 2008 Report Posted September 10, 2008 is there any extant video of this? haven't checked youtube - No, there isn't. The nearest is a clip from the Molde festival, Norway, August 1966, with Kenny Drew, NHØP, Alex Riel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwqLW7sgmF0 I'll Remember April (incomplete) Quote

marcello Posted September 10, 2008 Report Posted September 10, 2008 What got me interested is that Mike Fitzgerald put a collector/ researcher in touch with me because he knew I had a tape of this. I transfered it to cdr last night and wanted the best information, and this morning he ( C.J. "Kees" Hazevoet ) sent me this: The date of the Byas recording is c. July 22, 1970 (not 1971). He played the Jazz Showcase at the North Park Hotel in Chicago, 19 & 26 July 1970, and the TV date was done in that week. I'm trying to get the precise date. Quote
DukeCity Posted September 10, 2008 Report Posted September 10, 2008 This is from 1958, but damn... Yes, indeed! Anybody know Michel de Villers, the bari player in this video? What's his deal? And saxophone geek question: What kind of horn is Byas playing in these vids? There's that weird thing on the neck octave vent... Quote

Here's a clearer pic: I would think that would be a little disconcerting to be looking at while playing, but it sure didn't seem to bother DB! Quote

There's that weird thing on the neck octave vent... de villiers is on several of the jazz in paris discs: an octet ep led by him is on the "Saxophones a Saint-Germain-des-Prés" (which is great though his tracks pale a bit in comparison with the hubert fol and sonny criss eps on the same cd) another leader date is on "Danse a Saint-Germain-des-Prés" which i haven't heard... he's also on lucky thompson with the dave pochonet all stars (great cd, but i have never paid attention to him, though i believe the sidemen get some solos...) cheap: http://www.amazon.com/Danse-Saint-Germain-...7977&sr=1-2 highly recommended: http://www.amazon.com/Saxophones-Saint-Ger...8022&sr=1-1 http://www.amazon.com/Jazz-Paris-Dave-Poch...8055&sr=1-1 Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted September 11, 2008 Report Posted September 11, 2008 (edited) Have heard most of the Michel De Villiers material on those Jazz in Paris discs (and a bit more). No trailblazer maybe, but he certainly was no slouch either. Very solid, very swinging "modern mainstream" "Eurojazz" and really enjoyable if unpretentious, no-frills swinging music from that time is what you want.
