michel devos Posted February 12, 2006 Report Posted February 12, 2006 I have really liked freddie roach's brown sugar and Mo greens please, besides Good Move.Has anybody further recommendations for the available reissues? Quote
sidewinder Posted February 12, 2006 Report Posted February 12, 2006 (edited) I don't hesitate recommending this one. If you like 'Mo Greens' I'm sure you will enjoy this one too: I think it's still available as a Japanese import from the Bards at $16.99 - one of Freddie Roach's best. Me again. I seem to be nearly the only fan Freddie has got. See other forum. MG Quote
JSngry Posted February 12, 2006 Report Posted February 12, 2006 Big Freddie Roach fan here, but all I can say is to get everything. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted February 12, 2006 Report Posted February 12, 2006 Big Freddie Roach fan here, but all I can say is to get everything. That's what I say. You do seem to like a lot of the same stuff as me... MG Quote
JSngry Posted February 12, 2006 Report Posted February 12, 2006 Hey, I like a lot of stuff, period. I'm either incredibly eclectic or else have no powers of discrimination whatsoever. Quote

jazzbo Posted February 12, 2006 Report Posted February 12, 2006 I'm a big Freddie Roach fan and I seem to like the stuff some souljazzers DON'T such as "All That's Good"! Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted February 12, 2006 Report Posted February 12, 2006 (edited) I'm a big Freddie Roach fan and I seem to like the stuff some souljazzers DON'T such as "All That's Good"! All of them are good! But that one, with Calvin Newborn and Conrad Lester - phew! If Freddie has one failing, it's doing his own sleeve notes. They're wonderful sleeve notes; I love them. But he doesn't say anything about the musicians playing with him. So I know almost nothing about Conrad, except he made four LPs, two with Freddie, one each with Joe Carroll & Jimmy McGriff. And on every one, he plays his ass off! MG Edited February 12, 2006 by The Magnificent Goldberg Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted May 17, 2006 Report Posted May 17, 2006 I found out a couple of weeks ago that Pete Fallico had done a longish piece on Freddie on his Doodlin' Lounge site. There's stuff in there I hadn't the faintest idea about. A very interesting read. It's here: http://www.doodlinlounge.com/Stories/FreddieRoach.html and there's a nice photo of Freddie that looks entirely blissful MG Quote
andybleaden Posted May 18, 2006 Report Posted May 18, 2006 What a facinatiing resource . Real pleasure to read that. Not been on that site for a while...a long while Lucky enough to own all of his stuff and wish only a little more had been recorded Thanks for posting it Andy Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted May 18, 2006 Report Posted May 18, 2006 Lucky enough to own all of his stuff and wish only a little more had been recorded Me too. Freddie's last BN session remains unissued. It features Kahlil Rahman on vibes. And there are 6 unissued tracks from the sessions at which "The soul book" was recorded. MG Quote
andybleaden Posted May 18, 2006 Report Posted May 18, 2006 They would both be nice to get hold of.....especially the blue note date Can see that coming somehow as they have hardly done him much of a service so far Quote
JSngry Posted May 18, 2006 Report Posted May 18, 2006 Wonder what his "fairly well-know" pseudonym was that he used for his plays. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted May 18, 2006 Report Posted May 18, 2006 Wonder what his "fairly well-know" pseudonym was that he used for his plays. Me too; pity Rhoda couldn't remember. MG Quote

Well done Andy! It's almost certain that it's him, but if anyone's in contact with Amiri Baraka, I'm sure he's one to know. MG Quote
andybleaden Posted May 18, 2006 Report Posted May 18, 2006 I could of course claim all credit ( and of course will when the board is devalued again) but Mr Google deserves all the credit. A cunning search using the latest theater (theatre over here of course luvvie) type of search terms........very specialised and geeky search under freddie roach and plays on google and ignore boxing references! see what others can turn up as I got distracted with other substring searches Quote
Cliff Englewood Posted May 19, 2006 Report Posted May 19, 2006 (edited) This Bad Boy here hasn't been mentioned, until now. Not typical Hammond stuff, but class none the less. Edited May 19, 2006 by Cliff Englewood Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted May 19, 2006 Report Posted May 19, 2006 Both of those Ike Quebec albums are wonderful. And not just for Freddie. MG Quote
Shawn Posted May 19, 2006 Report Posted May 19, 2006 Both of those Ike Quebec albums are wonderful. And not just for Freddie. MG Amen to that!!!! Even though the best track on Heavy Soul doesn't even have Roach on it...I'm of course referring to that brilliant duet of Nature Boy between Ike & Milt Hinton. I listen to this twofer alot, great albums well worth seeking out... Quote
Cliff Englewood Posted May 19, 2006 Report Posted May 19, 2006 (edited) I have that twofer myself Shawn, haven't listened to it in quite some time, probably as it didn't really blow me away on first listen, but you know how sometimes things don't hit you first time and then later you're wondering why you don't listen to it more often.
