Jazz Kat Posted April 15, 2006 Report Posted April 15, 2006 Are those your photos, Marcello? Chuck with a Diz horn — nice! He actually got it from Dizzy. Diz and Chuck were very good friends up until he died. Chuck called him his musical father. Quote

paul secor Posted June 5, 2007 Report Posted June 5, 2007 I'd definitely would not call him my favorite Messenger trumpet player, but I also really like Donald Byrd's playing on the "Jazz Messengers" Columbia cd, especially his trumpet break on 'Nica's Dream'. Just wanted to mention him. Yeah. Donald Byrd deserves a mention here. A friend played me the Columbia Jazz Messengers back in the 80's, and I remember saying - "that's Donald Byrd on trumpet?" I realized then that I had formed an opinion by hearing the wrong recordings and not searching further - something I've done too many times, unfortunately. Quote
AndrewHill Posted June 5, 2007 Report Posted June 5, 2007 Kenny Dorham set the standard for the Jazz Messengers trumpet playing. The albums he recorded with the JM (Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers, The Jazz Messengers at Café Bohemia) have yet to be surpassed! And I love Lee Morgan! KD ruled! That would be my choice too, and that's not an easy choice to make. I think the Bohemia date is special because there's an added sense of warmth to the date, and to hear Kenny introduce his own tune is kinda neat. Quote
felser Posted June 6, 2007 Report Posted June 6, 2007 Freddie Hubbard on 'Ugetsu'. His solo on the title cut is amazing. Quote
