If they DO go totally down that road my bet is that the story line paralels The Godfather. Tony is left alive but alone (maybe in prison). No friends - no wife (would he kill Carmella? I hope that scenario doesn't materialize) and estranged children. My more cynical (realistic?) side says that David Chase will leave enough people standing for an eventual....what ? AllenLowe Posted March 13, 2006 Report Share Posted March 13, 2006 (edited) fun stuff, good first episode - I will say that the shrink sessions have long since lost their effect OR necessity - they've been, for some time, just a device to "explain" Tony, something which is not only unnecessary but dramatically a big mistake, left over from some middle-brow concept of psychology. I had an old and smart prof who used to describe this as the "case study" method of dramatic writing - an attempt to explain everything as though the audience wasn't smart enough to construct its own reality, and based on a mistaken idea that to so explain makes it more understandable. This sort of thing deprives the imagination of the will to do its own work. I live and work where a lot of this series is filmed. I saw Lorraine Bracco being interviewed one day and got a good look at her. In person she looks great. Better than on the show. Meanwhile Tony has put on 20+ lbs. while Vito has taken off 50. Christopher is now a Captain, and Eugene was flipped. I hate those long fucking breaks between seasons. Interesting how Ray drops dead, and Eugene hangs himself all in the same episode. It looks now as if the feds need a new informer. No surprise Tony got shot, except the fact that it was Junior minus his uppers. Obviously something is going to happen between Tony and Phil in the near future. Of course now we have to wait and see if Tony is going to end up in a coma or not. My guess is the story will focus on the introduction of some new characters and a power struggle within the family. If you remember a few seasons ago when Furio came over he promoted Silvio and Paulie as equals under him. Since though it seems Silvio has become consigliere while Paulie remained a captain. With Christopher now being a captain and the comment Vito made about he could be boss one day. Obviously Tony would probably pick Christopher and then all hell would break loose. There will be ugly, undisciplined jockeying for money and power, with Silvio (E Street Band member Steve Van Zandt) temporarily in charge, egged on by his Lady Macbeth-like wife (played by Van Zandt's wife, Maureen).
