The Magnificent Goldberg Posted February 10, 2006 Report Posted February 10, 2006 There are loads of killer Soul Jazz albums that haven't come out on CD. However, there's no point in inviting Mosaic to issue them; they wouldn't touch them with a very long bargepole. Water seems an outfit that is much more in touch with my taste. But they never include bonus tracks which, I have to admit, is a point in Mosaic's favour. MG Quote
tranemonk Posted February 10, 2006 Report Posted February 10, 2006 I still can't shake this bad feeling of inevitability that this means... (Sacrilegious statement...) the beginning of the end of the box set.... It's nothing more than my sense of impending doom.... I'll buy the Singles... but I'm just can't shake that feeling.... Quote

robviti Posted February 11, 2006 Report Posted February 11, 2006 please, everybody take a deep breath and relax. i talked with michael cuscuna when i was in new york two weeks ago. he told me that the idea for the single reissue series came out of a meeting he had some time ago with executives from some of the big labels. these suits were complaining about the poor sales of their jazz reissues, which could cast some doubt as to the future of some reissue campaigns. so, michael figured that as one door might be closing for the big guys, another door could be opening for mosaic. that's the extent of it as far as i was told. tranemonk Posted February 11, 2006 Report Posted February 11, 2006 probably 10-12 (Stitt, Blakey, Morgan, Columbia Swing, Elvin, Parlan, Anita, Sarah Vaughn, Dinah W., Farlow, Johnny Smith, Wilson, McLean... and a few more... ) AND???? Uh, guys? There's only been one Chicken Little in this thread, and I already gave him a prescription to help with that (which of course, jazzshrink, you're free to modify as the more qualified professional). robviti Posted February 11, 2006 Report Posted February 11, 2006 an admission: i'm a clinical psychologist, not a psychiatrist. any advice i might offer on prescriptions therefore would be based on my vast personal experience with pharmaceuticals. Quote
Ron S Posted February 11, 2006 Author Report Posted February 11, 2006 You're still more qualified that I. Quote
jazzbo Posted February 11, 2006 Report Posted February 11, 2006 That Bud Freeman lp is a great one! This is going to be a nice cd. The more I think about this, the more I think this is going to be a real fine series for Mosaic. Quote
montg Posted February 11, 2006 Report Posted February 11, 2006 Lon (or anyone), how's the sound on that Bud Freeman? Some of those 50s RCA recordings were loaded with reverb. Quote
jazzbo Posted February 11, 2006 Report Posted February 11, 2006 Sound is decent, not that heavy on reverb. Quote
montg Posted February 11, 2006 Report Posted February 11, 2006 Thanks Lon. Some of that Living stereo stuff sounds like it was recorded in an empty gymnasium. This looks like a good CD, with Teagarden and Pee Wee Russell, among others. Quote
jazzbo Posted February 11, 2006 Report Posted February 11, 2006 I have had the lp and I have a European cd. It's fantastic music! Quote
medjuck Posted February 11, 2006 Report Posted February 11, 2006 "After the dissolution of the original Jazz Messengers," Who were the original Messengers? These all sound good to me. I guess by ordering a lot of them at once we can claim to be saving money on shipping. Quote
jazzbo Posted February 11, 2006 Report Posted February 11, 2006 I think they're referring to the Silver-Blakey-Dorham-Mobley-Watkins group. Quote

Chuck Nessa Posted February 11, 2006 Report Posted February 11, 2006 Pleased to see the Freeman date(s) get some props. This is the one I will buy first since I don't have the 2 original lps any more. I hope MC moves into the Universal catalog for some issues of this type including Bud Freeman (Dot and Grand Award) and Pee Wee Russell (Dot). Quote
Harold_Z Posted February 12, 2006 Report Posted February 12, 2006 Just to toss in another good opinion on the Bud Freeman date. I have a clean copy of the lp and also the europeon cd Lon mentions. but I don't have the additional 4 tunes. I'll be getting this for sure. I'd like to see the Dot and Grand Award stuff Chuck mentions get reissued also. It's good stuff and should be in print. Quote
jazzbo Posted February 12, 2006 Report Posted February 12, 2006 No kidding, it would be great to get the Pee Wee Russell on Dot on cd! "Plays Pee Wee Russell" is one of my favorites! Quote
