Will the singles have the Limited Edition status?

I've been wondering that, also. Since, like the box sets, they'll only be leasing this material, the singles will of necessity be limited. The question is whether they'll specifically designate a finite number of copies for each single release (e.g., 10,000), and my bet is that they will.

No SACD layer just sucks. A label like Mosaic should be doing something to differentiate themselves and SACD is the way to do it. I see no reason to re-buy these sessions. Why would I re-buy Blakey's "Hard Bop"? For stereo? The mono sounds fine, thanks. JJ Johnson's "JJ!" on the Spanish RCA CD sounds very good to me. I just can't justify spending $15 each for these. Now, if these discs had an SACD layer, I'd be pre-ordering them NOW.

Hey, I agree that SACD would be nice and set them apart, though I'm less impressed with SACD than you seem to be (ever since my redbook playback has gotten so damned good).

But hey, the Ellington has never been on cd anywhere! And it's good. (Much more what I want than Hard Bop or the JJ album which isn't that great in my opinion). So I'm gettign the Ellington for sure.

Any word on whether these will be sold through retail outlets......perhaps later like the Selects? Of course ordering from Mosaic is preferable, and adding one on to an order of a set is fine, but for postage I guess you'd want to order 3 or so to lower the per/cd shipping costs.

First of all, kudos to Mosaic for their willingness to explore a single disc reissue program. That opens up a lot of possibilities. Wish we had a better idea of the available troves from which these treasures might be plucked. That would give us some idea of what we might expect in the future.

Given this decision, I would also think that Mosaic might be way more open to listening to the reissue entreaties of folks like us, given that the financial investment in single discs has to be significantly less than it is for a full box or a Select. I've said this before, but with the Concord acquisition of the Fantasy catalog and with the diminished chances of the more obscure elements of that catalog ever being released, I wish Mosaic would approach them about leasing some of their material.

Up over and out.

T,

Says right here (from the initial post) that they'll be moving to retail relatively quickly: :)

"This new series of Mosaic products will feature original artwork and liner notes, new remastering and many of these classic albums will feature bonus tracks. Although it is subject to change, we are expecting to release the titles from this series to retail distribution within nine to twelve months of release. With this lineup, we have every hope that this will prove as interesting and worthwhile a project as Mosaic Select has been over the last few years."

Of Course, Of Course w/o Discovery! is unfortunate. What the hell, make it a double.

That said, it's a fine album in and of itself.

Now, where does all this leave a Lloyd/Columbia Select which would include the Chico Hamilton albums?

But hey, the Ellington has never been on cd anywhere! And it's good.

Well I've had a CD copy since 1992

This is what I wrote on the "Other" board

Don't take it wrong, I like Mosaic.. but if the "Never available on CD", and "extra tracks previously unreleased" statements are not correct, it creates a bit of a "Madison Ave Commercialism" that hasn't been part of the Mosaic image in the past.

"Most of these have been, or are available on CD'

The Cosmic scene is a nice set, but I have it on CD, and it would appear that there is no additional material

It was made in Holland but may have been a British issue, printed there, and was readily available in the record stores

My copy of The Brothers.. was a "complete" session, with four extra tracks that the previous edition lacked.. 16 titles altogether.. does this mean Mosaic will have 20 tracks?

J.J. is also available as are the other J.J. Johnson RCA discs

Total J.J.

Broadway Express

The Dynamic Sound of J.J. with the Big Band

All legit. BMG Spain issues.. no extra material

Might have been better served as Select set

The rest are scattered over other discs. Perhaps the Lloyds is the only one that hasn't been issued ( except maybe in Japan)

So not much here for those of us who have been around a bit, unless sound quality is dramatically different and better

But some good recordings if they are new to you.

Still bit "unhappy" if Mosaic are going to make "never released on CD' claims that are erroneous. Those kind of statements belong in the " Lonehill" camp"

Well cool, glad that has been on cd before, never saw it available anywhere!

Peter, whenever an American company says "never on cd before" they mean IN AMERICA, just don't take the time to write it out. I agree that's lame and all, but American jazz cd buyers pretty much know and expect this. There are some who flat don't buy imports, which I can sort of intellectually understand, but can't say that I share the practice.

I've got the Cosmic Scene lp on cd remastered by Shawn, who does one helluva job, I bought the lp at the Austin Record Convention some four years ago. I like the session. It's from a period where I think Duke was doing little wrong.

If the only criterion for release in this series is that the album has never ever ever been on CD anywhere anytime ever, ever, well..that seems overly restrictive. We're twenty years into the CD era.

For those pining for the cheap Legacy reissue series, may I remind you of the copy protection debacle, the screw-ups with some of the Ellington releases (Sweet Thunder etc), and so forth. If paying a few extra bucks means we'll get higher quality, and it'll subsidize more releases, then I'm all for it.

Will the singles have the Limited Edition status?

Here is the answer from Mosaic:

The lease will run out at some point but there is no limited edition # of

copies.

Regards,

Mosaic Records

I stand corrected. By the way, didn't you know that it's more fun to speculate wildly about these things than to take the easy way out and go straight to the source for a definitive answer? :P

"not in the USA"

Well I sort of understood that, but the Cosmic I got was bought at Rose's Records ( when they still existed) in Chicago, purchased to replace the LP

Good addition to the Ellington catalogue for those who are unfamiliar with it

The "Brothers " was also bought in a routine USA store .. If Mosaic found the same "extra" tracks that are on there I suspect they didn't have to look far.. still is a bit Lonehill-ish though

the J.J.'s I did import.

When Mosaic started, their approach was somewhat unique and a boon to collectors of hard to find jazz recordings. These days the scene is much different, possibly due to Mosaic proving a market for quality jazz reissues, and it must be quite difficult to come up with sets that have appeal and consist of little that is not available elsewhere.

Still these will be a plus for those unfamiliar with the recordings, although as someone above pointed out, it's rare that I pay over $13.00 for a single CD due to internet purchases.

Can anyone discern any patterns to what they've chosen for the first six discs in this series??

RCA and Columbia are now under one big SONY conglomerate. That apparently opened some doors.

Would they ever consider releasing some of the Tony Scott RCA material. Please please please!

This is a great idea. I'd order the Brothers but I already have that. Other than that, I'll probably order the other 5, at least 4 of them. This seems like a natural area for them to go in. If you're going to make full sets, then do Selects, hey, why not move into singles. I would love to seem them 2 cd sets again. While I'm not big into vinyl that would also be a nice idea.

I emailed Mosaic about a Tony Scott set several months ago. Mosaic emailed back saying they'd look into it. Not a firm commitment, but it's something.

The Tony Scott RCA material has been available on import CDs for some time. (I have them) .. but they could do with a solid remastering job, and if Mosaic could also include the Brunswick material (I know, I know -- different label)... what a joy that would be!

Essentially I am sure that everyone on this board could name at least 20 albums that could be worth issuing as "singles". For starters I nominate Bill Holman's big band gem "The Fabulous" (with Charlie Mariano, Mel Lewis, etc.) on Coral 57188 (1957). Why that album has never been reissued I do not know? (John Norris did put out a Canadian LP reissue on the Coda label a decade or so ago..)
