sheldonm
While I really like the Sly of old, that was some sad shit last night. The first thing I heard on the news this morning was "the highlight of the evening was Sly Stone" . This show gets sadder as the years go on. While I've heard a lot about John Legend, I thought his performance was pretty weak as was Cold Plays. I'm not sure C. Martin would make it past the first round (well, maybe the 2nd round) of American Idol if folks didn't know who he was. My question is (and I should probably know this) how are the nominated bands/performers and the winners chosen? m~
DukeCity
My question is (and I should probably know this) how are the nominated bands/performers and the winners chosen? m~ I believe the organization that votes is NARAS (Natl. Academy of Recording Arts and Science). Exactly how one becomes a member of that august body, I'm sure I don't know.

jlhoots
I have a 2 CD "Essential" set that includes 8 cuts from There's A Riot Goin' On & a bunch of other good stuff.
Kalo
I have to admit I know very, very little of Sly Stone's music. You really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, REALLY might want to consider getting a copy of There's A Riot Goin' On ASAP. Trust me. YES! Everyone who doesn't own There's A Riot Goin' On should stop whatever they're doing and score a copy right now. One of the most inexhaustably deep albums ever. Adam
The Real Deal Thanks for that - superb. Did he slap the hand of the one grey haired gent in the front row who at least was gamely clapping along? Gave him five?

Sundog
Not to dwell on this but... Did anyone else notice that Sly's right hand/wrist appeared to be bandaged pretty heavily?
Alexander
I have a 2 CD "Essential" set that includes 8 cuts from There's A Riot Goin' On & a bunch of other good stuff. In fact, the "Essential" has (I believe) all but one track of "Riot," so it's definitely the place to start for the uninitiated...
danasgoodstuff
Hey, Sly actually appeared and did something. I, for one, was plaeasantly surprised. Lowered expectations, I guess. There's a Riot Going On brilliantly captures what went wrong, but I prefer to remember him by the earlier stuff.

Quincy
Riot is one of those that gets complaints from people who don't even hang out at the Steve Hoffman forum. However, the gang over there is generally pleased with the sound quality of the 2 disc Essential. You'll lose 1 song from Riot but gain a whole lot more. Perhaps the thing to do would be to sign up at yourmusic.com and get it for 11.98 (with free shipping.) If you end up truly loving Riot then you can track down the vinyl, or maybe they'll do a good job of mastering after the mohawk Grammy appearance. Guest
when green day won they said the cds been out for 2 years....can a cd really win thats 2 yrs old??!? i also didnt like how all those people were jammin together but thats whats the grammies is all about: really overdone 'jam' numbers with 6 guitar players and 27 keyboard players. gwen stefani deserves some credit but I hated U2 in 1983 and i hated them in 1993 and i still hated them in 2003. they get way too much credit for what i do not know. mariarah carey also made me sick. madonnas new song i actually really liked, however her albums for the last 10 yrs all kind of sound like the same type of modern dance music-- she is a great artist and really should try making a different kind of album at this point. i also was sickened by kelly clarkson. she should not of been allowed in the building. joss stone on the other hand is very talented. i also was mad that aerosmith was there. they are like the American U2. i saw aerosmith as a support act for the mighty Queen in 1977 and they were bad then and they are worse now. I never would have guessed they would have lasted so long....i am also happy rod stewart didnt show up. I attended a grammy after party in the late 80s and the impression i came away with was that these are not normal people by any stretch of the immiginatoin- at any level in the industry- from the musicans to the producers to the label execs. the pop music machine is fueled by cocaine and bad judgment. Sundog
joss stone on the other hand is very talented. I really like her first album and have been actively following her career. But I've also been consistently disappointed by her live performances. Her recent appearances at the super bowl and grammies were not even close to being good. She over sings and makes no attept to stay in tune. A lot of potential, but it just ain't happening....
JSngry
The only "problem" I have w/recommending Riot as part of a compilation/anthoogy is that it's one of those albums that stands alone, and is best experienced like that in order to get the full impact of it as an album. But maybe that's just the opinion of somebody who's always heard it that way.

That's very true. Unfortunately I've known a couple of people (OK, idiots) who don't play Riot at all because they can't tolerate the sound of the CD. (It's not that bad...sheeeesh.) But if one is really picky get the comp, find a copy of Riot and reburn a Riot from the comp and the one leftover song. Or maybe there's an iTunes option for the orphan Riot song. Things were easier when there was just the LP! Edited February 10, 2006 by Quincy

I thought I had read over at Hoffman that it was just one. Course I don't have Essential, and I don't have Riot on CD...so that'll teach me to respond to a thread about 2 things I don't know about. (Usually I try to limit myself to one I don't know about.)
Alexander
Sorry, I was the one who misremembered that "Essential" was missing only one track from "Riot." I remember comparing them once a while ago, and that's what I remember seeing (and I mean literally comparing the two discs side by side). Anyway, I used to own the "Best of" compilation and "Riot," and I traded them in to get "The Essential" because the sound on the two older discs was really awful. Oddly, I'm groovin' "The Essential" as I type this. "I cannot make it! I'm so HIP!"
