mgraham333 Posted July 21, 2003 Report Posted July 21, 2003 Is there a website for Uptown or site somewhere with a list of their output? Quote
Eric Posted July 21, 2003 Report Posted July 21, 2003 Go to www.cduniverse.com and type in Uptown and do a label search. Titles come out under a couple of captions, but I think that will get you there. Eric Quote

Eric Posted July 21, 2003 Report Posted July 21, 2003 Ha - of course - for a small fee. Does anybody have any comment on the Sonny Clark or the Hawkins? Thanks Eric Quote
Brad Posted July 21, 2003 Report Posted July 21, 2003 Both enthusiastic yes. Be warned however, that the sound on the Clark is not good (if that's important to you). However, the music is fantastic. Haven't listened to the Hawkins in a while but recommend it also. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted July 21, 2003 Report Posted July 21, 2003 (edited) Both enthusiastic yes. Be warned however, that the sound on the Clark is not good (if that's important to you). However, the music is fantastic. Haven't listened to the Hawkins in a while but recommend it also. The sound of the Clark is helped with a healthy treble boost. The Hawkins is a solid, but nonessential date. A good "snapshot" of Hawk at work. Edited July 21, 2003 by Chuck Nessa Quote
brownie Posted July 22, 2003 Report Posted July 22, 2003 Not mentioned are all the vinyls that Uptown produced in the years just before the arrival of the Compact Disc. Great stuff there (JR Monterose, Allan Eager, Dicky Wells, Philly Joe Jones' Dameronia, Budd Johnson&Phil Woods, Don Joseph and others). Quote

Dan Gould Posted July 22, 2003 Report Posted July 22, 2003 I'm curious about the Maria Muldaur. She's on the Uptown Christmas comp. and sounds pretty at ease with the jazzbos, didn't know she did an album on the label. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted July 22, 2003 Report Posted July 22, 2003 Missing from the list: 27.06 JR Monterose/Tommy Flanagan And A Little Pleasure 27.16 Pepper Adams Live At Fat Tuesday's 27.21 Buddy Tate/Al Grey Just Jazz 27.24 Peter Leitch Exhilaration Some of the Uptown lp titles (27.06, 08, 16, 17, 21 and 24) belong to Reservoir now. mikeweil Posted July 22, 2003 Report Posted July 22, 2003 Just edited the list above. Thanks Chuck, just had found about the Adams and Monterose/Flanagan. Some nice stuff I missed from the vinyl era... There are still five numbers missing, anybody help? What's the connection between Uptown and Reservoir? Looks like Reservoir started after Uptown had stopped issuing temporarily .... I read the producers' names on the issues before and after and made some conclusions but don't wanna drop any names here ... Quote
mikeweil Posted July 22, 2003 Report Posted July 22, 2003 I'm curious about the Maria Muldaur. She's on the Uptown Christmas comp. and sounds pretty at ease with the jazzbos, didn't know she did an album on the label. It's one of her jazzier albums, if you like her later singing you will like it. I liked her voice better when it sounded young and innocent, like on the Warner Bros. LP with the late Benny Carter, if I hadn't sold my copy years ago I'd offer it to you ... sorry Dan Quote

Looks like Reservoir started after Uptown had stopped issuing temporarily .... I read the producers' names on the issues before and after and made some conclusions but don't wanna drop any names here ... The missing numbers are unissued dates. More later. Bob Sunenblick started the label and after a couple of years, took on Mark Feldman (MD, not the fiddler) as a partner. After a few years they "divorced" and Mark started Reservoir. Mark got the dates I mentioned, and unissued dates by Leitch (Red Zone), Joe Puma and Ralph Moore. Bob still has "in the can" unissued dates by Beryl Booker, Dave Schildkraut, Lennie Andrade and Freddie Redd. The Redd and Schildkraut dates are in my hands, and any delay can be laid at my feet Quote
mikeweil Posted July 23, 2003 Report Posted July 23, 2003 I remember I read about the Schildkraut back then, or his "comeback". Sure would like to hear this! Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted July 23, 2003 Report Posted July 23, 2003 Might be a misdeal. Send $10 and you can have an lp. Quote
paul secor Posted July 23, 2003 Report Posted July 23, 2003 What's the deal with the John Bubbles? From Chuck's comment, I may be alone on this, but I like the John Bubbles Uptown. I bought it when it came out mainly because I remembered John Bubbles from the Tonight show when I was young. When I got the record I played it once and I guess it didn't connect with me (or vice versa), because I put it away and didn't listen to it for years. In 1996 a friend who was teaching an evening college class on jazz asked me about renditions of the song "Why Was I Born?" in my collection - he wanted to show how the same song could be done in myriad fashions by different musicians. One of the versions I found was John Bubbles'. It brought me back to the LP and got me to relisten. This time I found that I did truly enjoy it - if I had to use one word to describe the recording, that word would be "charming". I've listened to it a number of times since I rediscovered it and have enjoyed every listening. Again, this is just one man's opinion, but I'm glad I have it in my collection. Quote
Vincent, Paris Posted July 23, 2003 Report Posted July 23, 2003 (edited) I remember I read about the Schildkraut back then, or his "comeback". Sure would like to hear this! Me too! I never thought Schildkraut had recorded as a leader. I thought he had been lost for music until his death. And then I went back to AMG and found the following, It was released by Endgame in 2000. Schildkraut playing be-bop tunes mostly. Is this some kind of forgotten tape from the 50's or what ? Features Bill Triglia (believed he was out of business too) on piano and a bassist named Jeff Fuller. Anybody heard this ? Edited July 23, 2003 by Vincent, Paris Quote

Drummer Frank Bennett completes the quartet. Schildkraut is in good form - there are a few rough spots - and how much of his playing is readily available these days? The tunes are all pop standards or bop standards, with the exception of "Stars and Stripes Forever", the concert closer. I'd say that, for anyone with an interest in Dave Schildkraut, this is a record worth having. Endgame may have some connection with Jeff Fuller, since he plays on their only other release, a live trio date with leader Percy France and Dick Katz. Quote
paul secor Posted July 24, 2003 Report Posted July 24, 2003 Returning to the subject of Uptown Records, perhaps Chuck can let us know which Uptown vinyls are still available. Quote
bertrand Posted July 24, 2003 Report Posted July 24, 2003 Chuck, Please tell us more about the unissued Freddie Redd date. Is this the unissued trio date that is listed in the Mosaic Redd booklet as having been recorded at the same date as Lonely City? Thanks, Bertrand. Quote
Victor Christensen Posted January 1, 2005 Report Posted January 1, 2005 Chuck I would really like to see that the two Dameronia LP's were reissued on CD('s). I would think, that "To Tadd With Love" and "Look, Stop, Listen" could fit into one CD. Are there any plans regarding this. Vic Quote
