There are 2 versions of "Unforgettable Lee!" from Fresh Sounds records (who are they?).

Both say that the tracks were recorded live at Birdland in Spring / Summer 1960.

One version has a single disc:

1. Chess Players

2. This Here

3. Midget

4. Nelly Bly

5. Along Came Betty

6. Dat Dere

7. This Here

8. Justice

9. Night In Tunisia

The other version adds a 2nd disc and adds the tunes:

10. Lester Left Town

11. Noise In The Attic

12. So Tired

13. It's Only A Paper Moon

14. This Here

15. Sakeena's Vision

16. Koko's Waltz

The liner notes tell you nothing (if they even exist, I lost my case).

Was the whole thing recorded in one night? Was disc 1 recorded on one night and disc 2 on another? Or were the tracks taken from a variety of nights ? What nights ? What dates ?

Anyone know ?

Fresh Sounds is a label that issues lots of bootlegged material, some of it from live "collector's material", some of it from legit studio material. As for the latter, they protesteth otherwise, but they've yet to make their case in a convincing manner, although maybe some of that stuff has legitimacy. Maybe.

Anyway, these aren't really Lee dates at all, they're Blakey broadcasts. Given date is probably accurate. Besides Lee & Blakey, the band is Wayne, Timmons, & Merritt. The shit rocks.

Yeah, I can get the Fresh Sounds 1029 2 CD set from Amazon for ~$40.

What's amazing though is that some serious Leeficianados never heard of these sets.

I've had this stuff for years and years.

I don't spin them that often because I've found even better performances from collectors tapes! And there is so much to listen to, and increasingly for me less and less time. Lee has long ago fallen off my heaviest rotation list.

It's also on Fresh Sound 357, at least the 2004 version I've got.

Another question though: at the end of just that track, "Lester Left Town" (CD2#1), someone (dee jay?) is heard stating that Walter Davis Jr. was sitting in on piano for Bobby Timmons that morning... which implies Timmons was absent that day, hence Davis would also play on the other tune from that June 4, 1960 date, "The Midget" (heard on CD1#3).

But that doesn't seem to be noted anywhere...
