Rooster_Ties
She said her father loved the song Naima so much - he named his first daughter for the song (sounds like she was born in the mid-70's). What a lovely, lovely thing. Any other "jazz names" you've encountered in non-jazz contexts?? The Magnificent Goldberg
Thirty-four years ago, I persuaded my pregnant wife to call our son Leon Spencer, after the organist - but we had a daughter. Call that a near miss... MG

Rooster_Ties
I started a thread back on the old BNBB (just before it closed) to name a cat we had just gotten at the pound. Lots of names were suggested, and I finally went with "Pepper" -- after Pepper Adams. Edited January 28, 2006 by Rooster_Ties
Steve Gray
Not quite what this thread is about but interesting never the less .... I met 'Daphne' as in the Django tune, a few years ago. I believe she is still alive and living in my neighbourhood, that's Wimbledon in London.
brownie
Naima has been among the favorite names in France in recent years. Its popularity soared from the '60s, rose during the '70s and peaked during the '80s. 243 girls were named Naima in 1977 according to the statistics! And yes, Coltrane's tune did this! DukeCity
I went to high school with a kid named Upper Manhattan Medical Group. I seem to recall that it was just a family name, and had nothing to do with the tune.

vibes
An aspiring jazz artist in my parents' church congregation, Aimee Nolte, named her kids Miles, Ella and Charlie, which I think is pretty interesting. My mother bought me Aimee's CD for Christmas. It's not too bad.

paul secor
When I was in college, I saw a neon sign above a bar. From a distance, I thought that the name of the bar was Ornette's. I thought, "damn, that's cool." Then, I got a little closer and saw that the name was Onetto's. Ah, well.

What a lovely, lovely thing. Any other "jazz names" you've encountered in non-jazz contexts?? Justo Almario's daughter's name is Naima, and she was named for the tune.
