Just forget the Lifetime link (as Jack says in his notes this is beyond that) and enjoy it on it's own merrits. Scofield hasn't been playing better than on this discs since years and there's Jack.......(no words needed to express his playing on this one) Quote

mikeweil Posted June 29, 2006 Report Posted June 29, 2006 maybe having more earthbound and commercial players like goldings and scofield in for their more forward thinking and creative counterparts (young and mclaughlin) contributes to why people enjoy this disc more. it is less challenging, more easy listening music. there is no reason not to like it but perhaps the time would be better spent trying to get into the original lifetime music if it is not reaching you. because that was some great forward thinking challenging stuff. (well turn it over is a bit too much for me but i can respect it) though what if tony williams lifetime recorded for ECM? what would that have sounded like? it makes me sad that people can't get into/appreciate "emergency" but can then appreciate the ECM/commercial-ized imitation that comes out 37? years later..... It still is challenging stuff. Tony on ECM? Never!!! Tony's attitude was so deep black, and Lifetime all the more. And Tony never would have accepted the usually lame drum sound on most ECM recordings. Quote

skeith Posted July 2, 2006 Report Posted July 2, 2006 (edited) Well because of all this ruckus I went back and purchased the cd of the Tony Williiams Lifetime "Emergency" I had this album in the 70s, bought the cd , but then sold the cd some years ago. And let me say that while I think the players on Emergency are greater than Saudades, I think Saudades may actually be a better album. But I will say that the instrumental numbers are better than I remember, but the vocal numbers are worse (for god sake - do not insult Hendrix!!) and the most pathetic aspect of the vocal numbers are the lyrics- who wrote these- Neil Diamond or Rod McKuen? with every sort of hip cliche and bad rhyme they could think up. As for commercialism, I would imagine this album was criticized for being that and several tunes veer into the sort of bad rock group sound. The most uncompromising tune is Sangria for Three and yes - no compromises there. But most of the tunes are not particularly complex or out and I think less so than early Mahavisnu Orchestra. I suppose the most dissonant player is McLaughlin and he is playing stuff few rock guitarists would play and it is raw and Larry Young - well it sounds like he is inside of a tin can. As for Tony being "deep black" - well I am always wary of this concept. I can't imagine many blacks supported this band and when I hear blacks saying they hear nothing "black" in Jimi Hendrix or the World Saxophone Quartet - and also say they thought some white artists were black - well then I just don't know... I can't say I am thrilled with the way the drums sound on Emergency! None of Tony's compositions on Emergency are as memorable as "Pee Wee' which he wrote for the album Sorcerer. Roger Farbey Posted July 7, 2006 Report Posted July 7, 2006 (edited) Haven't bought this yet but on the strenth of the few seconds' worth of samples on the (UK) HMV website will definitely be buying this. Scofield sounds great - nice to hear him playing with some attack. The thing about Emergency is that it suffered major technical recording problems hence the raw sound (see sleevenotes for the recent-ish Lifetime Anthology CD). Indeed it's a miracle it was produced at all. No one can come anywhere near to the sheer electricity that Lifetime generated, but the Trio Beyond have a good stab at it and I think it will probably stand up on its own merits. Best thing though is staring at Jack's signature "TO CJ-Peace Jack DeJohnette" on the back cover :-D Which he signed for me a few years back.
