Verve Guitar Reissues

Saw those along with the Raney / Brookmeyer listed on DG's site today.

What sort of packaging did they use on these? The digipacks, foldout Verve Elite / Master package, standard CD, etc...?

Not familiar with any of the releases, but have been on a Verve kick lately. Maybe I'll swing by Borders on the way home to see if they've hit the shelves yet.

Thanks for the heads up!

The Ellis and Raney are on their way to me from CD Universe (preordered in December), and I just added the Roberts to another CD Universe order. The samples of all 3 of these on the CD Universe site sound great, and they're currently priced at just under $8.40 each (not sure how long that price will last).

Those CDUniverse pre-order sale prices usually last until one week after the street date.

I picked up the Raney and the Ellis. Haven't listened to either yet, but I did hear samples of both on iTunes and the certainly pleased me...

To answer the earlier question, they're packaged in jewel cases, not digipacks. They're quite reasonably priced at $11.99 a pop in brick and mortar stores...

I'm looking forward to that Raney. That should arrive with the pre-ordered 'Frivolous Sal' TOCJ that's due in next week. $12 is an a-okay price!

For what it is worth, all three have been longtime favorites of mine ... particularly the Herb Ellis ... it is a great swinger. Somewhere on this list I complained several years ago about the fact that Verve needed to reissue this one ... AND ... can we now possibly hope for a few more albums from the ABC-Paramount catalog? I certainly hope so ...

... and, of course, I ordered all three at the pre-order price. CDU added them to an order from yesterday ... so 7 CDs for about $6.00 in postage ... not a bad deal.

Are these part of the LPR series? I saw a couple of them at the store the other day, and don't recall the LPR series being mentioned anywhere on the jewel case.

For that matter, on the Verve website, each of the albums is not listed as an LPR, so....

No, not part of the LPR series. Part of what appears to be a new series--Verve (or Decca in the case of the Raney) "Originals". Jewel cases with a 4-page insert that depicts the original cover's front and back, and otherwise contains only personnel and track information (including original master numbers) and the original liner notes.

I have all 3 now, but so far have only listened to the Ellis and Raney. Both are good, but the Ellis is the standout for me. Somewhat similar to "Nothing But the Blues" and his sessions in the Mosaic Columbia Small Group Swing box, which I also like a lot.

Sounds like the latest of the LPRs looked over here (Lateef, Ayler...)

Only that remastering semed to be different (worse) over here, too (see discussion of "Psychicemotus" elsewhere).

Why can't they stick with the nice digipack design? Whoever invented those ugly jewel cases... head off (says this humble king  )!

The Raney was originally issued on ABC-Paramount.

Which is noted inside the insert, yet the outside of the case is labeled "Decca Originals" where the Ellis and Roberts are labeled "Verve Originals", and the Verve web site page on the Raney release says "original releasing label Decca Records."

But these are definitely not part of the LPR series--not so indicated on their respecitve pages on the Verve web site, and not included on the LPR page of that site. Perhaps Verve has replaced that series with this one? I'm sure the packaging on these is much cheaper than the digipacks--and previously mini-LPs--of the LPR series, which require "custom" printing of each package as opposed to generic jewel cases and cheap inserts.

Well as far as I know, in Europe, the LPR series *has* already been replaced by these "Verve originals". Same, I think, for the Verve master edition, which have slightly changed (to the worse, too, in my opinion) and are now called differently, too (Verve Masterpieces or what was it again? Still digipack, but much less elegant ones than the VMEs).

Seems Europe had mini LPs slightly longer than the US, and now maybe once again, the change took part over here half a year earlier...

For handling reasons, I preferred the Digipacks over the mini lps, but I'd rather have mini lps again, instead of the usual plastic crap.

True, the Digipacks and mini-LPs have a certain panache missing from the lowly jewel case; but for protection and preservation of the disc, artwork, and inserts, the jewel case is still superior. You can always replace a scratched/damaged jewel case and make the packaging as good as new, but you can't do that with the cardboard stuff.

To put it another way, "I want to say one word to you . . . . Just one word . . . . Plastics."*

Just picked all three up at B & N. Borders, for some reason, only stocks the Ellis so I special ordered these last Thursday. Extremely quick service BTW... the CD's were at the store on Friday afternoon.

So what's been released under the Verve Originals line in Europe?

I also prefered the look of the original Verve Elites and Verve Master Edition cardboard gatefold thingies. I liked the look / feel of the matte cardboard finish more than the higher gloss reprints lately. I don't recall seeing the LP Sleeve LPR's around here, although I've picked up several used this month.

My thoughts exactly.

Man, am I a sucker for that 50s bop guitar thing. Fingers crossed that these pop up at yourmusic.com!

CD Universe still has all 3 for their preorder price of under $8.40 each--though not for much longer, since they've been available now for almost a week. Of course, yourmusic.com will be even cheaper, with free shipping, if they get them.

Both the Mulligan CJB Village Vanguard and Wes Montgomery "Willow Weep For Me" LPRs are, or at least the ones I got from yourmusic.com were. IIRC, all the others I've obtained from various sources have been digipacks.

Picked up the Roberts and the Ellis this week and finally have listened to these two. The Ellis flat-out SMOKES! And I have to say that I think OP does his finest work here, both as an accompanist and a soloist. Nothing but swing and judicious use of space!

The Roberts is a nice swingin' affair as well, but a bit more laid-back. Thanks in no small part to the arranging of Matry Paich and Bill Holman. Gives the tunes a nice west-coast feel.

Well worth the money! :tup
