The digipacks, foldout Verve Elite / Master package, standard CD, etc...? Not familiar with any of the releases, but have been on a Verve kick lately. Haven't listened to either yet, but I did hear samples of both on iTunes and the certainly pleased me... To answer the earlier question, they're packaged in jewel cases, not digipacks. For what it is worth, all three have been longtime favorites of mine ... particularly the Herb Ellis ... it is a great swinger. Somewhere on this list I complained several years ago about the fact that Verve needed to reissue this one ... AND ... can we now possibly hope for a few more albums from the ABC-Paramount catalog? I certainly hope so ... ... and, of course, I ordered all three at the pre-order price. CDU added them to an order from yesterday ... so 7 CDs for about $6.00 in postage ... not a bad deal. I have all 3 now, but so far have only listened to the Ellis and Raney. Both are good, but the Ellis is the standout for me. Why can't they stick with the nice digipack design? Whoever invented those ugly jewel cases... head off (says this humble king )! Which is noted inside the insert, yet the outside of the case is labeled "Decca Originals" where the Ellis and Roberts are labeled "Verve Originals", and the Verve web site page on the Raney release says "original releasing label Decca Records." Well as far as I know, in Europe, the LPR series *has* already been replaced by these "Verve originals". Same, I think, for the Verve master edition, which have slightly changed (to the worse, too, in my opinion) and are now called differently, too (Verve Masterpieces or what was it again? Still digipack, but much less elegant ones than the VMEs). Seems Europe had mini LPs slightly longer than the US, and now maybe once again, the change took part over here half a year earlier... For handling reasons, I preferred the Digipacks over the mini lps, but I'd rather have mini lps again, instead of the usual plastic crap. True, the Digipacks and mini-LPs have a certain panache missing from the lowly jewel case; but for protection and preservation of the disc, artwork, and inserts, the jewel case is still superior. You can always replace a scratched/damaged jewel case and make the packaging as good as new, but you can't do that with the cardboard stuff. Extremely quick service BTW... the CD's were at the store on Friday afternoon. So what's been released under the Verve Originals line in Europe? I also prefered the look of the original Verve Elites and Verve Master Edition cardboard gatefold thingies. I liked the look / feel of the matte cardboard finish more than the higher gloss reprints lately. Both the Mulligan CJB Village Vanguard and Wes Montgomery "Willow Weep For Me" LPRs are, or at least the ones I got from yourmusic.com were. Big Al Posted February 5, 2006 Report Share Posted February 5, 2006 Picked up the Roberts and the Ellis this week and finally have listened to these two. The Ellis flat-out SMOKES! And I have to say that I think OP does his finest work here, both as an accompanist and a soloist. Nothing but swing and judicious use of space! The Roberts is a nice swingin' affair as well, but a bit more laid-back. Thanks in no small part to the arranging of Matry Paich and Bill Holman. Gives the tunes a nice west-coast feel.
