paul secor Posted March 15, 2003 Report Posted March 15, 2003 Last night on Jeopardy: The category was Musical Nicknames. The answer was Charlie Parker. One contestant answered: "What is Birdman?" They rang her up as wrong, but shortly thereafter credited her with an extra $2000 because their "panel of experts" had found that he had been called "Birdman". I disagreed - Perhaps someone might have said, "Hey, Bird, man!" (and that's stretching it) at some time, but never "Birdman". What say our panel of experts? Quote
Saint Vitus Posted March 15, 2003 Report Posted March 15, 2003 Maybe the contestant said, "What is bird, man." Alex is a man, you know? (B3er: We need a winking roboticon, don't you think?) Quote
Dan Gould Posted March 15, 2003 Report Posted March 15, 2003 Their "experts" are morons, or else they were so shocked to hear anything close to "Bird" that they decided to give her credit. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted March 15, 2003 Report Posted March 15, 2003 Speaking as an incurable Jeapordy addict, I was disappointed and apalled when the judges gave her credit for that. On the other hand, seeing clues involving Parker and Cannonball Adderly on my favorite show really gave me a rush! Quote
JSngry Posted March 15, 2003 Report Posted March 15, 2003 (edited) Isn't the "rule" that if you give an answer that contains a part of the correct one, or is more than the correct on but still gets the idea across, you get credit? Didn't used to be that way, especially in the Art Fleming days, but times change... Edited March 15, 2003 by JSngry Quote
Jazzmoose Posted March 15, 2003 Report Posted March 15, 2003 Jim, Alex said that the judges had found several references to Parker as "Birdman", so it wasn't a "trick result" or whatever... I must admit, I've never seen any such references. Makes me wonder what would happen if she'd answered "yardbird". Probably throw that one out! Quote
Dmitry Posted March 16, 2003 Report Posted March 16, 2003 (edited) The only time I watched the Millionaire show happened to be when a question was asked after whom Birdland was named. Dude called his friend, music "expert", and the friend said Louis Armstrong. What a dummy. Edited March 16, 2003 by Dmitry Quote
