These are the BS/SN discs I grabbed in the last two days...

Billy Harper – Black Saint

Mal Waldron – Git-Go, Crowd Scene, Update, Where Are You?

Old & New Dreams – O&ND, Tribute to Blackwell

Chico Freeman – No Time Left, Up & Down

George Russell – Essence, Electronic Sonata (both 1968 & 1980 ‘cause I got confused)

George Lewis – Homage to Charlie Parker

Dewey Redman – Living on the Edge

Roscoe Mitchell – 3x4 Eye

String Trio of NY – First String

Andrew Hill – Strange Serenade, Shades

Walt Dickerson – Life Rays

Jameel Moondoc – Nostalgia in Times Square

Max Roach – Live at Vielharmonie, Survivors

Bobby Bradford – Lost in L.A.

Richard Muhal Abrams – Family Talk

All-Star Session – Remembering the Moment

The samples are most helpful as I'm in more of an "inside/outside" rather than a more adventurous mood at the moment.

Deep Purple - Live in Stockholm 1970

How are those? Performance, sound quality, etc.

I've been thinking of giving them a try.

The Stockholm 1970 disc is the better of the two. Parts of this performance have been released as "In Concert" and "Scandinavian Nights", this is the first official release and contains un-edited performances. They were still a band in transition from their earlier progressive leanings to the leaner hard rock future, there are some growing pains along the way but that's part of the fun. The sound quality is excellent.

The 1969 date is sloppier but still interesting, though the sound isn't nearly as good as the Stockholm date.

*note* - The year of this performance is actually 1970, I edited the post.

Good list. I've downloaded quite a few of those myself.

are the discounted booster cards still available? I want so many of the BS/SN catalog!

Unfortunately, no. The Best Buy cards "expired" on Nov. 10, and the Circuit City cards "expired" in September. I use "expired" in quotes because you have 60 days from the date of activation of the card to select your tracks. I bought a boat load of BB cards a few weeks ago, and I have about 750 tracks left... a good chunk of them will be spent on the BS/SN releases!

Cheers,

Shane

I went through about two dozen booster cards over the course of the summer, but am now down to my last 20 downloads for the month (having gotten about 35 BS/SN albums in the last few days). I'm almost relieved as I've gotten so much music lately that I've barely had a chance to explore. And in another week I'll have another 50 per my plan.

Haven't spent a lot of time with these except for the Billy Harper and the Geri Allen which are both amazing, download them today.

Billy Harper - Black Saint

Geri Allen with Charlie Haden, Paul Motian - Etudes

Andrew Hill - Shades

Paul Motian - The Story Of Maryam

Paul Motain - Out Of Time - (Bill Frisell is a monster on this.)

Karl Berger - Transit

I upgraded from 50 tracks a month to 75. Lots of good stuff to download, especially the BS/SN catalog.

Shawn's metal recommendations never let me down... jammin' to Spirit Caravan right now, in fact! :tup:cool:

That's cool! I'm in a state of pure fanboy adoration of anything that Scott "Wino" Weinrich is involved in. Saint Vitus, The Obsessed, Spirit Caravan, Place Of Skulls, The Hidden Hand, etc. The guy should be up there with Lemmy in "underground metal God status".

Hell, I recently described him as a "heavy metal soul singer"...

One I downloaded awhile back that I seem to keep returning to is by a pianist named Bennick. The album is Home Safely. Piano trio. Kind of Bill Evans-ish.

Up over and out.

Well I'm shocked. The Bennick I referred to above is actually Bennink as in Han Bennink. I thought he was on the absolute fringes of the jazz universe along with guys like Dave Burrell and Peter Brotzman, but this is fine and mellow stuff. Jazz never ceases to amaze.

That's some of my favorite music these days, Dave: typically outside players playing in. Dave Burrell has a few albums that you might actually like. Also check out Marion Brown's "Back to Paris." It's about as accessible as he gets.

Not emusic, but I just discovered you can get the complete RCA/Victor recordings of Louis Armstrong for $9.99 at Amazon's mp3 store. Posting it here, because I know emusic thread folk are fine with the downloads.

Well...to add to the Black Saint/Soul Note feast, a vast swathe of ECMs just landed on e-music UK.

They put some up in Aug but then removed most of them. Some more appeared in September but since then nothing.

Today the number of albums jumped to 162!!!!!!

Though I'd love to know how they are labelling them - rather than attributing them to the leader they seem to be randomly named after one player on the disc. Jack de Johnettes New Directions is by Eddie Gomez it would seem! Not a major issue but makes finding them a bit harder.

How about Jarrett's 'Sun Bear' concerts in 13 downloads!!!!!! I recall when this was an unattainable luxury because of cost in the late 70s!
