JSngry
Hey you groovy kids, dig this! Somewhere in my closet I've got an old Hit Parader from 1968 (when it was actually a "serious" rock magazine) with an article about the Coral Electric Sitar. Now - who/what was Coral, and what kind of marketing department did they have?

Harold_Z
Danelectro was something else ! I still have a Danelectro guitar that I bought in the mid 60s new for $35. It's totally utilitarian. The body is made from formica ! I mean you can turn it over, eat on it and wipe it clean with a wet rag ! I think the neck is made from aluminum. In any event there is no truss rod adjustment and the guitar has needed no adjustment since I bought it. It has the famous "lipstick cover" pickup. Danelectro made a 4 string bass which was pretty much the same thing. I wish I had bought one back then. I'm sure it was in the same price range. They also made the first 6 string bass guitar that I know of. It had a sound somewhere between a regular Fender Bass and a guitar and it was used extensively in the studios to double the bass part on primarily cornball rock dates. You'd recognize the sound if you heard it. They made amplifiers too. The guitarist in the first band I was ever in had one. Danelectro was originally manufactured by a guy named Dan Armstrong who sometime in the early 70s manufactured guitars under the Dan Armstrong name. I remember one was made of clear fibreglass. BTW - the Vincent Bell mentioned in the Coral Sitar blurb was a very busy NYC studio guitarist in 50s and 60s.
