Swinging Swede
DUKE ELLINGTON - Perdido (1965) Oh my god, Paul Gonsalves is sleeping throughout the entire tune!! That's why Jimmy Hamilton after taking his clarinet solo also has to take the tenor solo...
bertrand
I wonder how long it will take before the video of Steve Irwin's last moments shows up... Not that I will be looking. Bertrand.

John Tapscott
DUKE ELLINGTON - Perdido (1965) Oh my god, Paul Gonsalves is sleeping throughout the entire tune!! That's why Jimmy Hamilton after taking his clarinet solo also has to take the tenor solo... Now that is hilarious. It's really bizarre at the beginning of the drum solo where you can see Gonslaves with the tenor in his mouth and totally out of it - as still as a corpse. Man, it's no wonder Ellington's was the only band Paul could play in. No one else would put up with a minute of this. BTW, who is the trumpet (cornet) soloist? I should know who it is, but can't quite place him. Herbie Jones?

Swinging Swede
BTW, who is the trumpet (cornet) soloist? I should know who it is, but can't quite place him. Herbie Jones? Ray Nance. Allegedly Duke fired Nance due to unreliability. Gonsalves remained!

Jim Alfredson
It appears that the footage on YouTube is from this DVD: Duke Ellington - Copenhagen 1965
Matthew
I love how the trombone player behind Gonsalves is pointing his bell right at Paul trying to wake him up.
Jim Alfredson
Supposedly, from comments on the DVD page of Amazon.uk for that video, Gonsalves falls asleep several times during that show, only to wake up and blow incredible solos on certain tunes. Chuck Nessa
Witnessed an amazing Paul/Edward exchange in the early '70s. On stage, Paul cried and Duke embraced him. More later if anyone wants it. I think I have an audio tape of it.
Ron S
When I first watched that video, I thought Gonsalves was trying to do some sort of weird Lester Young impersonation. No joke!

Nance is playing the Freddy Jenkins role at that point (and playing it very well). For proof see the clip of Old Man Blues from Check and Double Check.
