Thanks I'm no expert on this, but there is a different recording to the one featuring Woods. It has Sims and Cohn with Roger Kellaway, Bill Crow and Mel Lewis (rec. 1965). Haven't heard it but read somewhere sound quality was so-so, so this maybe the one you're referring to? Done some Googling and there is an issue by "Naked City" and a Japanese one by "Jazz bank". Has anyone compared these two? F Quote
brownie Posted January 10, 2006 Report Posted January 10, 2006 Done some Googling and there is an issue by "Naked City" and a Japanese one by "Jazz bank". Has anyone compared these two? F Allen Lowe should know about these two releases! I have the Naked City CD 'Zoot Sims at the Half Note'. That's the one with Al Cohn, Roger Kellaway, Bill Crow and Mel Lewis. There is also a Philology CD 'Directly From the Half Note' that includes two dates from the Half Note. First one with Phil Woods and Al Cohn (also Dave Frishberg and Jimmy Rushing), second one with Cohn, Zoot Sims, Richie Kamuca (and more Frishberg and Rushing). Love all those Half Note sessions! AllenLowe Posted January 10, 2006 Report Posted January 10, 2006 the Naked City was based on tapes that came from Japan that I remastered and that were supposed to be issued, intitially, only in Japan. The sound is actually very decent, though not spectacular. This was part of a series of things I remastered for the Japanese market for a deal that fell apart due to some bad faith. I've got more than a few in my basement if anybody wants a copy, I can sell 'em for $5 shipped, pardon the advertisement. Quote
Jazztropic Posted January 10, 2006 Author Report Posted January 10, 2006 Allen , sent a PM what an offer! Thanks Quote
Pete B Posted January 10, 2006 Report Posted January 10, 2006 There have been a number of tapes of this band at the Half Note circulating for years. Sound quality is not always great, but of course the music is always worthwhile. There is some great material with Roy Eldridge and Richie Kamuca as well. Some of that ended up on a Pumpkin lp. I assume there were remote broadcasts made from the Half Note, I seem to remember that some of the material I've heard was announced. It must have been a great scene in its day. Quote
