Hi,

I've two LPs with duets of the jazz pianists Art Simmons and Jack DiƩval recorded in the 60s in Paris. The sound is amazing (with great Steinways) and there is a good harmony between the two pianists.

The sidemen are Michel Gaudry (b) & Daniel Humair (dm) on the first LP, and Jimmy Woode (b) and Franco Manzecchi (dm) on the other.

Do you know if something similar have been recorded (with two pianos) ?

Thanks

I recently flipped myself out yet again to the beautiful duets between Tommy Flanagan and Barry Harris on several Monk tunes on the BMG video "Thelonious Monk: An American Composer." Outstanding!

I also have a soft spot in my musical heart for a Savoy lp that paired Eddie Costa and John Mehegan, "A Pair of Pianos." Also like the odd but great "The Country And Western Sound of Toshiko Akiyoshi and Steve Kuhn" on I think Audio Fidelity.

Some other piano duos (there are plenty more, I am sure!):

- Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn Piano Duets 'Great Times!', the Mercer sides that came out on Riverside,

- Paul Bley and Bill Evans on a couple of sides from the George Russell album 'Jazz In The Space Age' (Decca),

- Tommy Flanagan and Kenny Barron 'Together' (Denon),

- John Lewis & Hank Jones 'An Evening With Two Grand Pianos' (Little David/Atlantic),

- John Lewis & Hank Jones 'Piano Play House' (Toshiba)

Piano Duets are one thing I love to hear...

Dick Hyman and Dick Wellstood

Dick Hyman and Ralph Sutton

Marian McPartland and practically everyone

Earl Hines and Jaki Byard

Jaki Byard and Ran Blake

John Lewis and Hank Jones

are among the many titles represented in my collection.

Byard told me about an unreleased session he did with Tommy Flanagan, but

Fantasy/Concord says it isn't in their Prestige holdings.

Two I have not yet heard but am looking forward to hearing very soon:

Alexander von Schlippenbach & Aki Tasse - Piano Duets Live in Berlin (FMP)

Marilyn Crispell & Georg Graewe - Piano Duets (Leo)
