I saw this posted on another bulletin board......

--------------------------------

Hey All, I have been searching for Lennie Tristano's "Descent into the Maelstrom" on CD for years, and after much digging around, found that Jazz Records is re-releasing his catalog, so I wrote to them. Here is the reply I received today:

"Andy,

Jazz Records will be issuing 'Descent into the Maelstrom' as a CD. Hopefully, this will be done within the next year.

I would suggest that you check out website from time to time.

Thank you for your interest.

Best Regards,

Lenny Popkin

It was reissued by the Japanese October 2002 in nice DSD remastered sound. The label is East Wind and the catalog number is: UCCJ-9072. Not available through HMV.JP so OOP but maybe Mr.Tanno has a copy left.

The live Tristano stuff that made up half an album on Atlantic - has the rest of those sessions ever been released anywhere except on the Mosaic box? Is it in print anywhere today?

A lot of it was released on an Atlantic double LP in the late 70s/early 80s. That's where (and when) I first got this excellent material. As far as I know, the Mosaic Box is the only currently available source for this music.

I was referring to the quote above in my previous post.

Like Nate, I have Maelstrom on an Inner City LP. I always assumed the lousy sound was because of the sources of the original recordings: private tapes, radio broadcasts, etc.

Never heard the Inner City but don't think it would sound much different than the EastWind original, which I do have.

picked up a copy of the East Wind issue (on LP for £3) , sound isn't as bad as I'd expected , interesting if pretty dense material not helped by the mid-fi recording quality. Some of the tracks are far better recorded than others
