I'm looking for a used truck for hauling stone, mulch, trash to the dump, and other jobs that only a truck can do. Basically for weekend driving. I'm contemplating a 1977 Ford F-100 300ci 6 cylinder, automatic. Good engine/transmission, some rust. Prefer a full size (but doesn't have to be) and doesn't have to be a 4x4.

What would you recommend? What are you partial to?

Thanks for all replies!

Ford all the way. They may very well indeed make the world's worst cars, but damn if they don't make the best trucks the world has ever seen. I've never been able to explain it. I can only live by it. That's why I have the VW for hauling ass and the Explorer for hauling drums.

My fleet is 90% Ford, 10% GM.

I've had little problems with either, but I don't have anything older than a 1997.

Those old Ford 6 cylinders are cheap to repair and last forever. The same could be said for the GM 350 V8.

Have a mechanic check it out, if it's solid, and you don't plan on hauling massive amounts of weight, buy it.

If you worry about load capabilities, I would recommend stepping up to a 3/4 ton.

STAY AWAY FROM DODGE!

I would also avoid the imports, unless they are newer models.

catesta- how come you don't recommend a Dodge? Have you had bad experiences with them?

Here in Central VA, it's Ford country- seems every truck you see if a Ford. For older vehicles, I like the fact that I can work on them and don't need a computer to determine what is wrong with the engine

I shouldn't knock Dodge in general, but I did have some bad experiences in the past.

I can only speak of the two I had in 1996. They both had major problems and I never got out of them, what I do from the Fords.

Is that who that is? All I know is that whenever he comes on the tube, my wife is guaranteed to hit the mute and snarl "He makes me sick!"

That's funny!

My wife likes Toby Keith- I call him "that pissed-off country singer" since he seems angry on all the songs I've heard.....

I guess there's a reason why I see a lot of older Ford trucks than other makes.....
