Jim Alfredson Posted July 30, 2004 Report Posted July 30, 2004 ALAN JONES, PHIL DWYER, RODNEY WHITAKER: let me tell you about my day Put Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Joe Henderson, Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, Jimmy Garrison, and Paul Chambers in a recording studio in 2004 and you'd probably hear something like this enthralling debut recording from three wonderfully gifted musicians. I don't know about the other two, but Rodney Whittaker has a lot of records under his belt. Quote
ejp626 Posted August 30, 2004 Report Posted August 30, 2004 (edited) After much too long, I am finally buying Waiting for the Boogaloo Sisters. While I was at CD Baby, I decided to pick up a few others, based on comments in this thread and elsewhere. This is the shopping cart: YOUR CART - BRIAN PATNEAUDE QUARTET: variations AVRAM FEFER TRIO: calling all spirits JEFF LAIBSON- MARK EGAN-DANNY GOTTLIEB-TRIO: thelonius bach's lunch ORGANISSIMO: waiting for the boogaloo sisters I'll report back on impressions when they arrive. One note about BRIAN PATNEAUDE is that he includes a number of MP3s of live performances on his website: Brian Patneaudemuch like Greg Osby. Edited August 30, 2004 by ejp626 Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted February 3, 2005 Report Posted February 3, 2005 UP for air! I was just browsing CDBaby and came across this bad boy: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/mbboq The first track is GREEEEAZY baby!! Might have to put this one in the basket! Check out the samples! I've never heard these cats before, but they are GROOVIN'! Quote
JSngry Posted February 4, 2005 Report Posted February 4, 2005 Mel Brown, eh? That's NOT the same Mel Brown that did those Impulse! dates, btw. This is a different Mel Brown. In the 80s, I gigged a big bunch w/a Soul singer named Greg Smith who had relocated here from Portland, and he RAVED about this Mel Brown. The when Rob Blakeslee was here for a quick minute or two, he did the same. Sounds as if the raves were justified! Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted February 4, 2005 Report Posted February 4, 2005 Yeah... I'm going to order the disc tonight. I emailed the organist and asked him to join. He hipped me to another CD. Woot! Quote
scottb Posted February 5, 2005 Report Posted February 5, 2005 (edited) Found this ESPM as in Earland, Sparks, Person, Muhammad! Looks good on paper anyway, the sound quality of the samples is not so good. Not sure if it's the samples or the disc itself. Edited February 5, 2005 by scottb Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted February 5, 2005 Report Posted February 5, 2005 Just ordered these bad-boys from CDBaby: Ron Levy, Karl Denson, Melvin Sparks - After Midnight Grooves Mel Brown B-3 Organ Quartet - Live at the Britt Festival Ron Levy-Karl Denson-Melvin Sparks - Finding My Way Steve Yeager - New Groove Blues (thanks scottb!) Can't wait to get my greeeeeaze on! Quote
Soul Stream Posted February 5, 2005 Report Posted February 5, 2005 Man, ya'll are some CD Baby freaks. That earland reunion looked cool but the sound quality scared me off. Jim, you might be on crack payin' good money for those Levy CDs, those sounded whacked to me!(but good luck). Quote
scottb Posted February 18, 2005 Report Posted February 18, 2005 Found a new one by Adam Scone. I know B3er is a fan and I'm planning to get his first one available on the site although it's not a priority. This new one is bit different. Scone with strings!! ...and vocals. The strings remind me of Barry White style strings which isn't a bad thing. The vocals however remind me of Joe Satriani's vocal (Flying In A Blue Dream anyone?) which is NOT a good thing. Don't take my word for it, check it out HERE Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted February 18, 2005 Report Posted February 18, 2005 I asked him on Tuesday night if he had anything new out and he said yes. He also warned that it was very different from the last one and smiled slyly. Interesting... Quote
scottb Posted February 18, 2005 Report Posted February 18, 2005 (edited) What did you think, B3er? "Interesting" is fairly ambiguous. How about multiple choice a) B-) b) c) d) e) Have you had a chance to listen yet? I'm having trouble with any samples from cdbaby right now. I don't want to spoil it for you but don't have a Coke in hand when you listen. The spit take and nasal burn will get you! Edited February 18, 2005 by scottb Quote
scottb Posted February 18, 2005 Report Posted February 18, 2005 (edited) Adam Scone samples are back up! "I said 'Do you want to roll with me?' You said 'I don't roll with the trash.' I said 'Watch your mouth.'" "cruise control, power windows and seats...eats... EATS... Ohh!" Oh! is right my friend. That had to be as painful to sing as it was to listen to! Looks like another new cd on his website. PSYCHEDELIC EYE. Edited February 18, 2005 by scottb Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted February 18, 2005 Report Posted February 18, 2005 I haven't heard the CD yet. I'm listening to the samples right now. All I can say is: WILD! Quote
Soul Stream Posted March 8, 2005 Report Posted March 8, 2005 "He's not afraid to drive... The Country Squire!" Man, I LOVE that! I dig this record!!!! and had to order it from CDBaby even though Adam said he'd send me one. I couldn't wait. Love the vibe. Adam's just simply one of the young greats imho. That Country Squire is one of the most creative twists on the freaky Lonnie vocal vibe. Adam is Lonnie's handpicked sub for himself in Lou Donaldson's band, so it's only fitting. High As A Rocket...that line about "She said, I don't roll with trash. I said better watch yo' mouth." Had me rolling. He's got two more CDs in the can, the second is psychedllic organ and the third is a japanese opera he's written. I'll tell you one thing, the range Adam has on the instrument is incredible. A true musician who knows no bounds. Quote
makpjazz57 Posted March 8, 2005 Report Posted March 8, 2005 I recently picked up pianist Bill Mays' "An Ellington Affair" with John Goldsby and Lewis Nash. I like buying from cdbaby because the artist gets a decent portion of the profit - CDbaby takes $4.00 per CD. Several other Bill Mays CDs available at cdbaby and I'd recommend anything by Mays. His playing this past October on the Jazz Cruise was astounding. Marla Quote
jazzkrow Posted March 8, 2005 Report Posted March 8, 2005 I live in Portland and Mel Brown is the REAL deal. He is easily one of the best drummers on the West Coast in a tasty laid back way. He is the first choice drummer for out of state talent coming to town-and has been the primary drummer for later years Motown talent. An earlier rendition of one of his bands won the Playboy Jazz Festival Talent Search competition in LA 'round 10 years ago.. His weekly gigs at Jimmy Maks in Portland-Hammond B-3 group, a "Jazz Messengers" type sextet and/or Quintet featuring Warren Rand, Stan Bock, the great Thara Memory on trumpet are beyond high energy-they play non-stop 2 one hour plus gigs, blending one tune into the next. GET THAT CD-Louis Payne is a dynamite B-3 man. Mel Brown deserves nationwide props-he's that good-he's just chosen to stay in the Northwest. (Winard Harper gave him big time praise the last time he was in town.) Quote
Phil Meloy Posted March 8, 2005 Report Posted March 8, 2005 Gotta wonder about a place that lists Chuck Leavell and James Spaulding in the free jazz category. The musicians select what categories they're listed under themselves. Quote
mikeweil Posted April 25, 2005 Report Posted April 25, 2005 These organ discs are on my want list, too. Last year I ordered seven CDs during some reduced prices campaign, some Latin Jazz by Emil Richards, some things I don't remember and three CDs by the Mackrosoft - if ya like post-Headhunters funk, this is it (Paul Jackson and Mike Clark are on some tracks). They have funn(k)y titles: Journey to Vaginus etc. Quote
mikeweil Posted April 25, 2005 Report Posted April 25, 2005 I don't know about the other two, but Rodney Whittaker has a lot of records under his belt. I have one of them on DIW - real good engaging stuff, not a bit derivative, and lots of drive in the rhythm sections. Quote
SGUD missile Posted April 26, 2005 Report Posted April 26, 2005 CD Baby has manged to sell about 50 of my Origin CD ( Convergence Zone ) they're a really slick operation ..they even provide a credit card service for selling CDs on gigs AND charging cover charges! Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted January 25, 2010 Report Posted January 25, 2010 CDBaby is currently donating $1 from every CD sold (and $1 from every full-album download) to the Haiti Relief effort. Now's as good of time as any to pick-up some independent music. Any other suggestions from folks here on great jazz to be had from CDBaby? Here's my latest acquisition, son of the legendary Jimmy Garrison: Matthew Garrison - Shapeshifter Gonna pick this up today:Larry Goldings - Long Story Short Quote
mikelz777 Posted January 25, 2010 Report Posted January 25, 2010 I'd recommend any of the Cecilia Coleman CDs. Hard-bop fans should like Maffy Falay Quintet - Live At The International Istanbul Jazz Festival '94 It isn't the kind of stuff I usually listen to but Maurice Brown - Hip To Bop is worth checking out. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted January 25, 2010 Report Posted January 25, 2010 This is a good thing indeed. Doodlin' Records - Pete Fallico's label specialising in jazz organists - are all available at CD Baby Rhoda Scott Bill Heid (3 of his) Will Blades Lonnie Gasperini Trudy Pitts Gloria Coleperson Fast 3 Bobby Pierce Joey DeFrancesco Up Trio And so are Organissimo's albums - but you've got all thouse, haven't you? kenny weir Posted January 25, 2010 Report Posted January 25, 2010 I've been a regular cdbaby customer over the years. Not anymore. A while back they completely revamped the website. Now it's slow, stupid, clumsy. And they've done away with the "geographic locator" that made it easy to seek out music from, say, San Francisco, New Orleans or even Melbourne. 'Tis a shame ... Quote
