For old timeĀ®'s sake, how about the last week of October 1939?

Benny Goodman is at the Waldorf Astoria (where Carmen Miranda sings at supper)

Artie Shaw is at the Pennsylvania

Fats Waller is at the Famous Door

Louis Prima is at the Hickory House

Bud Freeman is at Nick's

Joe Sullivan and Billie Holiday are at Cafe Society

Louis Armstrong is at the Cotton Club,

And the Savoy Ballroom has the Benny Goodman Orchestra and (late) Dickie Wells.

Many thanks, kh1958 :tup

Very difficult choice. I might have opted for Cafe Society. Wish I had been there!

Sounds like an excellent choice, except, is it possible that Dickie Wells had Lester Young with his group?

Pardon my typing error, the Benny CARTER Orchestra is at the Savoy.

  • 5 years later...

On the day I was born, Cab Calloway opened in a show at the Cotton Club, called "Rhythmania". That week, Fats Waller and his orchestra were at Connie's Inn at 131st and Seventh, The Coon-Sanders Nighthawks orchestra was playing the Terrace Room of the New Yorker Hotel, and Helen Morgan was putting tears in people's eyes at the New Lido, on West 52nd.

Week of Nov. 24, 1955 had NYC clubs crawling with musicians of note. Jonah Jones Quartet @ The Embers; Serge Chaloff and Tony Scott sextets alternating @ Basin St. East; Barbara Carroll was at the CafƩ Madison, Bud Powell and the Stan Kenton Orch. (separately) at Birdland, Mae Barnes at The Bonsoir, Oscar Pettiford Trio at The Composer. Charlie Mingus had a quartet at The Bohemia, the usual crowd at Eddie Condon's, the Metropole, etc.

That's just a partial listing, domo1129.

Without buying the DVD, I'd like to find out who was playing the week of 1/8/77. I bet there was some serious Alphabet City punk going on...

Not sure if you mean august the first or january the 8th.

Will do august the first if not well wait for tomorrow

Hal Galper and Lee Konitz were having a duet at Beefsteak Charlie's later that week Sonny Stitt would be there for a few nights.. They mentionned CGCB but not the bands playing. Also Chico Hamilton was in town at Hopper's , the Art Ensemble of Chicago was at Storyville and later that week Philly Joe Jones Art Pepper was at the Vanguard with a drummer named Elvin Jones . Jimmy Giuffrie would be at Sweet Basil In the rock department Donovan Yes and Bad Company would be visiting MSG that week.

Think of it , wished I could be there.

If you get a chance, 11/7/45? I'm hoping Bird was playing somewhere.

Couldn't find Bird, but still a pretty good week...

Downbeat has Sidney Catlett and Billie Holiday

Onyx has Roy Eldridge and Ben Webster

Three Deuces has Slam Stewart Trio with Erroll Garner

Zanzibar has Duke Ellington

Cafe Society Uptown has Mary Lou Williams

Stuyvessant Casino has Bunk Johnson and Baby Dodds

Late to the party, but 11/7/1945?

I'm hoping that Bird was playing somewhere, but the New Yorker might not have a listing for a club Bird would have played back then.

^_^

Don't worry, I do this kind of thing all the time. In fact, I already checked to see if I posted here before. I had no recollection of it. :D

Sometimes I can't remember what I said 6 weeks ago, let alone 6 years. :D

And - only if you have a chance - 3rd May, 1981 please.

Or will the answer be too depressing?

The only thing depressing is that I didn't get to see what was playing that week--

Jaki Byard at Angry Squire (actually May 1 and 2),

Dannie Richmond Quintet closes on May 3 (Sunday) at the Village Vanguard (followed on Tuesday by the Elvin Jones group)

Fat Tuesday has Chet Baker

West Boondock's has Sadik Hakim (who I thought recorded with Charlie Parker and disappeared thereafter).

had forgotten that Alexander/Red and I are from the same week, and it's a good one... !

Dude, that is 7 years after our first born and 3 after our second. Why should I take you seriously? :smirk:

Must be great to have seen Scott Joplin, Chuck! :)
