Jazzmoose Posted August 7, 2003 Report Posted August 7, 2003 Had to go with the obvious, Whisper Not. But I'm glad to see Killer Joe on the list!! Quote
Bright Moments Posted October 7, 2004 Report Posted October 7, 2004 i remember clifford! (now in the lead!) B-) Quote
Jim R Posted October 7, 2004 Report Posted October 7, 2004 "Along Came Betty", with "Whisper Not" and "Are You Real" not far behind. I remember meaning to vote on this in July, 2003. I guess I needed a little extra time. Quote
sidewinder Posted October 7, 2004 Report Posted October 7, 2004 'Stablemates' on the basis of some incredible recorded versions out there, not least Miles' for Prestige. I can never get bored with the unusual and unpredictable changes on this one. Quote
B. Goren. Posted October 7, 2004 Report Posted October 7, 2004 Amother vote for Whisper Not. And if we are talking about favorite versions, I prefer Lee Morgan's version (Mosaic set, disc 1). Quote
Dave James Posted October 7, 2004 Report Posted October 7, 2004 I'm a major sucker for a good ballad, so "Clifford" gets my vote. "Whisper Not" runs it a close second. "Along Came BettY" ain't bad either. Up over and out. Quote
jazzbo Posted October 7, 2004 Report Posted October 7, 2004 I must be continuing my weird off the beaten pathness. . .I would choose "Out of the Past." Quote
blue-note-ojc Posted October 16, 2004 Report Posted October 16, 2004 I voted for I Remember Clifford. One of my favorite compositions by anyone. I have a number of recordings with Benny Golson on it and he never solos on any of them. Whisper Not would be second. I agree that the Shelly Manne at the Blackhawk is my favorite recording of that song. Tom Quote
Shawn Posted October 17, 2004 Report Posted October 17, 2004 Hard choice. I was stuck evenly between Whisper Not & Stablemates....finally flipped a coin and went with Whisper Not. Quote
tooter Posted October 17, 2004 Report Posted October 17, 2004 Seems to me that "Whisper Not" didn't have to be written at all, it was just plucked out the air where it had always existed - it sounds so natural somehow. Level pegging now between IRC and WN. Lots of other good tunes on his list though - "Five Spot After Dark", for instance, not mentioned yet? Quote
cannonball-addict Posted October 17, 2004 Report Posted October 17, 2004 I think that the original version of Killer Joe is too often relegated to a lower place on the jazz pecking order just because its too simple. You gotta love the hipness of that vamp. And the bridge ain't too shabby either. I love the Toots Thielemans version from East Coast, West Coast as well as the original. I also like this new one from Terminal 1. Quote
