Dan Gould Posted July 17, 2003 Report Posted July 17, 2003 Sorry if I skipped your favorite, but I think I came up with a pretty good list. Mine is definitely "Whisper Not". Quote
catesta Posted July 17, 2003 Report Posted July 17, 2003 All good, if you ask me. I picked Killer Joe, but could have easily gone I Remember Clifford. Quote
king ubu Posted July 17, 2003 Report Posted July 17, 2003 Went with WHISPER NOT, too. One of my favorite jazz originals, actually. ubu Quote
Templejazz Posted July 17, 2003 Report Posted July 17, 2003 (edited) Me too for Whisper Not. Roy Hargrove did a great version. Edited July 17, 2003 by Templejazz Quote
GPfr Posted July 18, 2003 Report Posted July 18, 2003 I had to go with Stablemates. I've been dealing with that tune since I was 16. Quote
shrugs Posted July 18, 2003 Report Posted July 18, 2003 I Remember Clifford for the most part but I really love Whisper Not a la Keith Jarrett and co. Have any other piano trios recorded it? Quote
JSngry Posted July 18, 2003 Report Posted July 18, 2003 This is one of the few times I can actually choose "a" favorite. I'm with Geoff - "Stablemates" is it for me. Killer (in several ways ) changes, and a beautifully lyrical melody (with an almost subliminal allusion to RITE OF SPRING that may or may not have been intentional). The lyrical quality usually gets obscured because of the tempo most cats play it at, but I had occasion to hear Jon Hendricks 3 nights out of a 5 night club booking back in the early 80s, and every time, he did "Stablemates" with what I guess were his lyrics, and he did it at a nice MEDIUM tempo, drummer on brushes, all that. The beauty of the melody just came alive hearing it like that, and I've been intoxicated by it (and a few other things...) ever since. Quote
Dmitry Posted July 18, 2003 Report Posted July 18, 2003 Park Avenue Petite, that's me baby, one vote. Blue Mitchell plays it so well. The whole band is simply first rate on Blue Soul. Coincidentally, they play his Minor Vamp, as well as his arrangements of Polka Dots and Horace Silver's Nica's Dream. Petite is a very soulful piece by Golson. Thanks for including it. Quote
brownie Posted July 18, 2003 Report Posted July 18, 2003 Voted for 'I Remember Clifford'. Just superb. But I could have voted for 'Blues March' which was the hip tune when the Jazz Messengers (with Benny Golson) invaded France back in 1958. That tune was being played on all the French radio stations then. Quote
Alexander Hawkins Posted July 18, 2003 Report Posted July 18, 2003 I Remember Clifford for the most part but I really love Whisper Not a la Keith Jarrett and co. Have any other piano trios recorded it? I think there might be a version by the Brown/Thigpen edition of the Oscar Peterson trio, but I could well be wrong! Quote
paul secor Posted July 18, 2003 Report Posted July 18, 2003 I'm with Dmitry on this one - "Park Avenue Petite". I picked up Blue Soul about a year or so ago, and that version of this tune grabbed me immediately. I have to admit that "You Don't Know What Love Is" runs through my head for a moment whenever I hear this, but Blue, Wynton, Sam, and Philly Joe do it so perfectly that it doesn't matter. Perhaps I'm voting for their version of the tune rather than the tune itself, but either way it gets my vote. Quote
Dan Gould Posted July 18, 2003 Author Report Posted July 18, 2003 (edited) I Remember Clifford for the most part but I really love Whisper Not a la Keith Jarrett and co. Have any other piano trios recorded it? AMG reveals a lengthy list of trio as well as duo or solo recordings of "Whisper Not", including Ray Bryant, George Cables, Kenny Drew, Tommy Flanagin, Harold Mabern, Ahmad Jamal and Hank Jones (on a CD I have that is quite nice, Essence with Billy Higgins and Ray Drummond) and Horace Tapscott. brownie Posted July 18, 2003 Report Posted July 18, 2003 A very moving piano trio version of 'I Remember Clifford' is the Bud Powell one on the 'Bouncing with Bud' Sonet album, with NHOP and William Schiopffe. Bud played the Golson tribute pretty often. Quote
JSngry Posted July 18, 2003 Report Posted July 18, 2003 and don't forget the fine versions of "I Remember..." that Don Byas recorded fronting the Bud Powell Trio. Superb, both. Quote
brownie Posted July 18, 2003 Report Posted July 18, 2003 Totally agree but a trio plus one is a quartet! Quote
Dan Gould Posted July 18, 2003 Author Report Posted July 18, 2003 I thought it was pretty clear that when Shrugs wrote this: I Remember Clifford for the most part but I really love Whisper Not a la Keith Jarrett and co. Have any other piano trios recorded it? "it" refers to Whisper Not, not Clifford. Quote
JSngry Posted July 18, 2003 Report Posted July 18, 2003 Totally agree but a trio plus one is a quartet! Except when the horn player lays out! Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted August 5, 2003 Report Posted August 5, 2003 (edited) I voted for "I Remeber Clifford" but my real fav is "Are You Real" which is not on the list. Edited August 5, 2003 by danasgoodstuff Quote
RDK Posted August 5, 2003 Report Posted August 5, 2003 Hands down it's "Killer Joe." Not just my favorite Golson tune (and he's written a number of good ones), but one of my favorite jazz compositions period. Quote
jazz1 Posted August 5, 2003 Report Posted August 5, 2003 Whisper not, one of my fav jazz tune, and to me the ultimate version is from Shelly Manne and his men at the Black Hawk, a true masterpiece, Richie Kamuca and Joe Gordon solos are just incredible and the groove, what can one say, jazz does not get much better than that!!!!!!!! does it? Quote
Larry Kart Posted August 6, 2003 Report Posted August 6, 2003 "Step Lightly" is a nutty piece, akin to some of Horace's writing on "Stylings of Silver." Quote
Brad Posted August 6, 2003 Report Posted August 6, 2003 I Remember Clifford but that is also one of the saddest, a very wistful ballad. Along Came Betty and Blues March would be second. Quote
BruceH Posted August 7, 2003 Report Posted August 7, 2003 It's "Whisper Not" for me. Could easily have been "Along Came Betty" too. "Are You Real" should be on there. Quote
