Guest Posted December 19, 2005 Report Posted December 19, 2005 (edited) It's a perfectly logical question, maybe you just haven't had your coffee yet. For me, the answer is Christian McBride's "Gettin' To It". My vet confessed to me one day that he wanted to be a jazz bassist when he grew up and this is a favorite Christian McBride session of mine. I wish he would make more straight ahead albums like this one. He is an insanly talented bassist, but I don't dig his new stuff. I guess as long as he does he should keep playing it and I know he has an audiance for it. Still, <audible sigh> Why am I buying a Christmas present for my dog's vetranarian? Because I'm married and women come up with these types of things and send men out to do them...and he's a good guy who helped us through a dog crisis this year. Anyone else hipping their butcher, baker, candlestick maker or what-have-you to some tasty sides this year? Edited December 19, 2005 by TroyK Quote

jazzbo Posted December 19, 2005 Report Posted December 19, 2005 Closest thing I came to was giving my exboss a cd (Andrew Hill, Judgment RVG) for Xmas to celebrate the fact that he is my EXBOSS. I have been able to be social with him since I was able to go to work for another manager, and I've enjoyed talking audio with him and getting him interested in jazz (Barney Wilen was in fact the entry point for him!) but. . . boy am I glad I don't have to work for him! Guest Posted December 20, 2005 Report Posted December 20, 2005 No cds, just some of this stuff...... Uh oh, now you're getting into one of my other petty causes. Where is that Vodka made. (Peter, you may want to look away) Quote
Peter Johnson Posted December 20, 2005 Report Posted December 20, 2005 From alchoholreviews.com ( ) Italian vodka? Sure, why not! The Italians make Zone flavored vodkas, which we've rated highly. And now there's Mezzaluna. Rather than use a cheap neutral spirit and distill it a zillion times into something very smooth and tasteless, Mezzaluna is made from Semolina grain, which gives it a flavor like no other vodka. Oh sure, it's smooth, thanks to triple distillation and quaduple filtering, but the flavor is something else- grain, nutty chocolate then lemon. For my secretary: and Quote

Guest Posted December 20, 2005 Report Posted December 20, 2005 I'm catagorically opposed to non-eastern bloc vodka. Why is it that everyone all over the globe decided to start making vodka a few years back? Were they afraid that the Polish were getting too uppity? The Italians make wine, they make Ferraris, they make fine shoes and suits and many many more things that are worthy of export as do the French, Dutch, Canadians, Americans, Swedes, etc. Why can't we let Poland, Russia, Bulgaria, Estonia and their pals make the Vodka? It's morally repugnant to start squeezing the Polish out of the Vodka market. Pretty soon Norway's going to be trying to go toe to toe with the Caribbian on Rum production. Well not on my watch!!!!! Of course Troy and Dmitry are correct. Still, I do indulge in the Italian Vodka from time to time. These days I just mainly give away as gifts to the kind folks that care for my chihuahua. Quote
Dmitry Posted December 20, 2005 Report Posted December 20, 2005 I like Grappa...I think. Is there a particular brand I should be looking for? Quote
catesta Posted December 20, 2005 Report Posted December 20, 2005 It's not cheap, but may be one of the best. Castello Banfi Some others to consider... Candolini Inga (very mild) Giori Quote
sheldonm Posted December 20, 2005 Report Posted December 20, 2005 Well....my better half is a vet and if I gave her a jazz cd, she would look at me like I had a third eye ....it would end up as a coaster!!! m~ Quote
Dmitry Posted December 20, 2005 Report Posted December 20, 2005 You can reqally get f#$ed up on that stuff, I should know. I once spent New Year's night with a Romanian bartender who all but dragged me to her place in Woodside, Queens from a bar on Bleeker Street; she was pouring one free grappa after another, when the boss wasn't looking... Evil brew. Quote
