This is what happens when computer spell-checks replace actual proofreaders--human beings who check copy not only for spelling BUT FOR SYNTAX AND USAGE. The state of proofreading in today's newspapers, magazines, and books is horrible.

...and take a close look at those obnoxious "crawls" on all the cable stations. They're FULL of typos...

Germany Wins World Cup by Beating Germany

By BARRY WILNER

CARSON, Calif. - Germany won the Women's World Cup 2-1 over Sweden on Nia Kuenzer's header in the eighth minute of overtime Sunday.

A substitute who came on 10 minutes earlier, Kuenzer soared high to deflect Renate Lingor's long free kick over the outstretched arm of goalkeeper Caroline Joensson, who was brilliant all day.

The German players mobbed her and rolled together on the ground, while Sweden's beaten players were motionless and stunned.

"I was confused," Kuenzer said of her momentous goal. "I wasn't sure what happened, and then my teammates are jumping on top of me and we are all on the ground."

Much of the crowd, which was decidedly pro-Sweden, cheered and chanted the Swedes even as the entire German team stood on a podium, jumping up and down as they received their championship medals.

Germany's first women's world title came in the same fashion when it beat Sweden in the 2001 European Championship final - on an overtime goal. Germany's men have won three World Cups.

"These are two very equal teams," Germany coach Tina Theune-Meyer said. "There will be many parties today in Germany."

German captain Bettina Wiegmann and star forward Maren Meinert played in their final game for their country and both were outstanding.

"This is my greatest day," Wiegmann said, the gold medal dangling over her No. 10 jersey. "Yes, it is the perfect ending."

Not to the Swedes, who while praising Germany's power and skill also decried the officiating.

Sweden coach Marika Domanski Lyfors was livid with referee Floarea Ionescu's awarding of the free kick that Kuenzer converted.

"It's harder to lose when it's not fair," said Lyfors, who berated Ionescu on the field. "It wasn't a free kick and everyone saw it. I don't know how she could call it."

Before an announced crowd of 26,137 - it appeared to be several thousand less - the Germans committed five players to the attack in the second half. It paid off with an early goal and a half-dozen superb chances.

After a somewhat listless first half, the Germans came out strong and scored just a minute into the second period. Birgit Prinz, voted the tournament's outstanding player, sent a pass to the right wing to Meinert, who had three steps on the defense. Her right-footed shot from 15 yards glanced off Joensson and into the net.

Just saw this one in CNN's article about the comatose woman in Florida who's wish to die is being prevented by an over-reachng Jeb Bush:

"Michael Schiavo, who already has one child with his long-time pregnant girlfriend, is his wife's legal guardian."

I don't think the writer meant to imply that Schiavo's girlfriend has been pregnant a long time, but that they've been together a long time, and she is presently pregnant. There's gotta be a better way of saying it.

Not a headline, but when I used to live in Chicago, they ran a PSA kind of thing with one of the Cubs (Gary Matthews?) about supporting your local "liberry" ... must have run for three-four days before they took it off the air.

Subhed on page 1 of today's Chicago Tribune, my alma mater:

"Spec. Jarob Walsh was sent to his Illinois family to recover from his wounds.

But he says the longer he stays, the deeper his sense of disconnect."

From out twice weekly independent newspaper here in Portland, the following headline appeared on page 2 the Friday edition three weeks ago.

"50% of Men Prefer Bush."

It doesn't get any better than this. I'm just worried about the other 50%.

Up over and out.
