Bol Posted December 14, 2005 Report Posted December 14, 2005 I've been listening to this CD, and I am afraid that it leaves me a bit cold. The lineup (Smith, Anthony Davis, Malachi Favors, Jack DeJohnette) is so good, and the CD has received very good reviews. But the music seems uninteresting. Perhaps it grows on you after a while? .:.impossible Posted December 14, 2005 Report Posted December 14, 2005 These people like this one! Some big rhythms from DeJohnette! Yes, let it grow on you. I think there is a lot there to enjoy. Quote
sal Posted December 14, 2005 Report Posted December 14, 2005 My first listening didn't do much for me, but subsequent visits have greatly paid off. I really like the disc alot, and the follow up 'Year of the Elephant" is on my short list. Quote
Peter Posted December 14, 2005 Report Posted December 14, 2005 Guess I'll have to give it a few more spins. Hasn't done much for me so far. Quote
JohnS Posted December 15, 2005 Report Posted December 15, 2005 I'm with Bol and Peter here, neither do very much for me, I'm sorry to say. Quote
Bol Posted December 15, 2005 Author Report Posted December 15, 2005 I was listening last night to John Lindberg's "Tree Frog Tonality", which also has Leo Smith on it, and I find that record so much more interesting than the "Golden Quartet". Lindberg's compositions seem to be much better knit, and more surprising than Smith's. Quote
JohnS Posted December 15, 2005 Report Posted December 15, 2005 I'll admit to playing 'Tree Frog Tonality' more. Quote
Steve Reynolds Posted December 15, 2005 Report Posted December 15, 2005 the 2 Lindberg CD's with Smith *tower* over the first Golden Quartet CD then again, they are John Lindberg led bands - what would one expect? Lindberg remains maybe one of the top 2 or 3 most undervalued composer, bandleader, improvisor, bassit in the history of this music it really is incredible that he is not more acclaimed after all these years Quote
king ubu Posted December 15, 2005 Report Posted December 15, 2005 Same here... love "Tree Frog Tonality" but merely find the Golden Quartet albums ok... I think I liked the second one a bit more, though. Will have to play them again soon to find out what they do to me nowadays. Quote
gnhrtg Posted December 16, 2005 Report Posted December 16, 2005 (edited) I'd had this for more than a year and though I did try to get into it, it never did much for me. Traded it recently. I also agree with the later comments on how this compares with Lindberg's discs. Edited December 16, 2005 by gnhrtg Quote
sal Posted December 16, 2005 Report Posted December 16, 2005 After reading this thread I will checking out some John Lindberg stuff as soon as I can! Quote
Adam Posted December 19, 2005 Report Posted December 19, 2005 Where is the John Lindberg material available? What label is it on? Quote
Nate Dorward Posted December 19, 2005 Report Posted December 19, 2005 I think Black Saint & Between the Lines. Quote
Tony Pusey Posted December 22, 2005 Report Posted December 22, 2005 Sadly did nothing for me, ( strokes for folks..) I recently traded my copy. Quote
